Memorial Mass in Epping will honor victims and heroes
EPPING — Like most people, Nancy Metevier will never forget where she was when heard the news on Sept. 11, 2001.
The Raymond woman was at a restaurant at the Epsom Traffic Circle during a stop on her way to Concord to look up some family history when someone came in and announced the attack.
Metevier and other patrons were stunned.
The restaurant TV was turned on, and everyone began watching the shocking images flashing across the screen.
“In some ways it seems like it was just yesterday,” Metevier said.
It’s been 11 years since that day, and while countless ceremonies were held to remember the victims and rescuers in the first few years that followed, few have continued.
But the Knights of Columbus Council No. 6850, Assembly No. 2644 is doing its part to keep the memories of those lost alive.
The council will hold its Sept. 11 Memorial Mass and Candle Lighting on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church in Epping.
The service will honor those killed in the attacks and the many who joined the effort to save lives, including those operating tugboats, ferries and their own personal boats who took part in a massive marine rescue effort to evacuate people from Lower Manhattan.
“They moved so many people off the island that were jumping into the water,” said Metevier, who has planned the service with her husband, Ron, and others on the council.
While the service is open to anyone, the council is hoping for a particularly strong turnout among police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, military personnel and family members and friends of victims.
Metevier was touched by last year’s service when family members of New Hampshire victims attended and attached personal notes to flowers that were placed next to rows of candles at the front of the church.
“Let’s always remember what happened that day,” Metevier said.
