Tech firm is wooed to Merrimack from Massachusetts

MERRIMACK — The New Hampshire Advantage is alive and well, according to a high-tech entrepreneur who is celebrating the one-month anniversary of his company's move from Westborough, Mass., to 11 Continental Blvd.

BurstPoint Technologies, with about 20 employees, has added engineering and finance positions since making the move, and is hoping to add three more engineering positions by year’s end, according to Patrick Clark, founder, president and CEO.

A high-tech entrepreneur who has been involved with several startups, Clark was drawn to New Hampshire by a recruiting effort that began with a television show.

In January, Gov. John Lynch and Christopher Way, interim director of economic development, were interviewed about the New Hampshire Advantage on “The Early Show” on CBS. A BurstPoint engineer who lives in New Hampshire saw the broadcast and contacted the state’s economic development office, urging New Hampshire officials to get in touch with Clark about moving BurstPoint to the Granite State.

The company is experiencing triple-digit growth in just its second year, according to Clark, who hopes to double his New Hampshire work force over the next 12 months. BurstPoint provides video streaming, recording and content management for business, education and government clients, who put the technology to use in a variety of ways, including virtual town meetings, distance learning, video on-demand and digital signage.

Clark, a Hollis resident, said he was looking for a larger space along Route 495 in Massachusetts when he got the call from Cynthia Harrington, business recruiter with the state Division of Economic Development. Assistance from the state development office, combined with the fact that most of his engineers live in Southern New Hampshire, were important factors in the relocation, Clark said.

“All of my engineers, other than two remote guys, live here in New Hampshire. Probably the biggest reason for the move is the pool of senior technical talent available to us here. That was very compelling,” he said. “We’re expanding globally, so I am hiring a fair amount of sales people in the field. But from an engineering standpoint, that core talent needs to be here, where we’re located.”

In a press release from the Division of Economic Development, Gov. John Lynch said BurstPoint will add to the employment base and technological diversity in a region already becoming well known for its number of high-tech companies.

According to the release, Clark, an Air Force veteran, recently put the company’s technology to work for a cause, inviting military families to a Boston Celtics game at TD Garden and setting up a video connection with a military base in Afghanistan.

“Although thousands of miles apart, loved ones could watch the game in real time together,” said Lorna Colquhoun, communications and legislative director.

The company’s clients include the state of Alabama, the Department of Homeland Security, the University of Maine, the State University of New York, the World Bank and MetLife.

“There are so many components that make this a great story,” Harrington said. “When we put it all together, we find that everyone benefits from this relocation — valued employees who now work closer to home; a company that sees the advantages of doing business in New Hampshire; and the local economy, which is buoyed by a growing company that plans to double its work force in the next year.”
