Storms knock out power to more than 4,700

A strong cold front spawned thunderstorms and strong winds that left more than 4,700 New Hampshire homes and businesses in the dark Saturday evening.

The outages were spread over more than 50 communities, with Effingham sustaining the largest number, at 756, according to outage maps on electric companies' websites.

In Littleton, the high winds brought a tree coming down on wires sparked a house fire on Pleasant Street, but the fire department quickly extinguished the fire, police said.

A number of trees and wires were reported down in the town of Newport, including on Oak Street, Old Springfield Road, Fletcher Road and Blueberry Ridge Road. Local fire and public works crews helped remove trees blocking roadways.

State police in the North Country reported “a bunch of trees down” on roadways, including one in Warren and Franconia. In Danbury, Route 4 was closed in the area of Wallace Pre-Fab until a utility crew remove.

Partly to mostly sunny conditions are forecast for the state on Sunday, with temperatures mainly in the 70s.
