HS Football Roundup: Souhegan rebounds over Portsmouth 18-13
Souhegan bounced back from last weekend's non-league loss to Winnacunnet of Hampton by posting an 18-13 triumph over Portsmouth in Amherst on Friday night.
The Sabers held a 12-7 lead with 10:15 to play when the game was delayed by lightning. Souhegan increased its lead to 18-7 on its first drive after play resumed. Portsmouth scored with three minutes to play, but failed to recover the onside kick.
Souhegan improved its record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Division III. Portsmouth, which opened its season with a victory over Division I Londonderry, dropped to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Division III.
Division I
Nashua South 43, Salem 19: At Nashua, Sourth raced out to a 29-0 lead after one quarter and improved its record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Division I. Salem fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Division I.
Division II
Keene 38, Merrimack 6: At Merrimack, quarterback Lucas Luopa threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to help the Blackbirds raise their record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Division II. Tim Lane (73-yard run) and Tom Galanes (9-yard run) also scored for Keene.
Merrimack dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Division II.
Timberlane 22, Spaulding 21: At Rochester, Timberlane of Plaistow erased a 12-point deficit with five minutes left .
Marcus Villafane scored both touchdowns for the Owls in the final minutes, one from 11 yards out to cut the Red Raider lead to 21-16 with 4:52 remaining, and then the go-ahead TD from a yard out with 45 seconds left.
Spaulding (0-2 overall, 0-1 in Divison II) did nothing with its final possession and the Owls (1-1, 1-0) opened Division II play with a win.
Division IV
Trinity 61, John Stark 24: Trinity of Manchester rolled up 355 yards of offense and seven touchdowns from seven different players in the first half.
Quarterback Carmen Giampetruzzi threw two touchdown passes in the first half, a 65-yarder to Ryan Boldwin and 7-yarder to Brad Rhoades. Giampetruzzi added an interception on defense.
Stark fell to 0-2. Trinity is now 2-0 and will play at Plymouth next weekend.
Plymouth 40, Kennett 7: At Conway, Plymouth's Brandon Goodale rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries as the Bobcats raised their Division IV record to 2-0. Kennett dropped to 0-2.
St. Thomas 54, Kingswood 8: At Wolfeboro, Ryan Monette rushed for 92 yards on 16 carries, caught two passes for 36 yards, and scored four touchdowns as the Saints raised their record to 2-0 in Division IV. Kingswood fell to 0-2.
Windham 48, Lebanon 6: At Lebanon, Kevin Cooney rushed for a team-high 80 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns to help Windham raise its Division IV record to 2-0. Windham quarterback Joe Lorenz completed 7 of 10 passes for 203 yards. The loss dropped Lebanon to 0-2,
Hanover 21, Laconia 0: At Hanover, Quarterback Shawn Cavallaro led the way for the undefeated Marauders, throwing a 39-yard scoring strike to Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris and rushing for two touchdowns. Cavallaro completed 5 of 8 passes for 144 yards and rushed for 64 yards, He also played defense and intercepted a pass. Hanover improved to 2-0. Laconia is winless after two games.
Division V
Monadnock 34, Bow 7: At Bow, Jacy Parker scored the only touchdown for the Falcons, who slippped to 0-2 in Division V. Parker's TD came on a 45-yard run in the second quarter. It was 12-7 after the PAT kick, but Monadnock dominated play in the final two quarters.
Stevens 12, Sanborn 6: At Claremont, Stevens scored on a 37-yard pass from Logan Batchelder to Billy Brooks and got a 26-yard field goal from Rocky Beliveau. The Cardinals, who are 2-0 in Division V, also scored on a safety. The loss dropped Sanborn to 1-1.
Non-league
Londonderry 38, Alvirne 7: At Londonderry, Dennis Bishop scored rushed for 182 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries to help the Lancers improve to 1-1 overall. Michael Ryan added 96 yards on 10 carries for Londonderry, which has yet to play a Division I opponent. Division III Alvirne dropped to 0-2. Each loss came against a Division I team.
King Philip 35, Dover 12: At Dover, Kyle Seawards and Dwayne Gordon scored for the Green Wave in this non-league loss. Dover is 0-2 overall, but has yet to play a Division II contest.
