Ben Franzoso runs for 139 yards, Winnacunnet cages Bulldogs, 13-6

BEDFORD — Bulldozing senior Ben Franzoso had 139 yards on 27 rushes, and Winnacunnet of Hampton wore down Bedford for a 13-6 victory in Division II football Friday night.

Warriors junior quarterback Ing Hao Veasna rushed for a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter and threw for a 15-yard score to junior Collin Witt in the fourth quarter.

The Bedford offense, coming off a 48-7 rout of Milford, was shut down until the final play of the game, when the Bulldogs went to the air. Senior QB James Caparell scrambled and lofted a 16-yard rainbow pass to Mike Vailas, who made a highlight catch in traffic. Otherwise, the host Bulldogs had a long night against Winnacunnet's all-senior, all-stout linemen.

The Warriors (2-0, 1-0 Division II) twice stopped Bedford (1-1 overall, 0-1 Division II) inside their own 20-yard-line and wreaked havoc inside the Bulldog backfield. With four minutes remaining, the Bulldogs marched to the Winnacunnet 7-yard-line but couldn't convert on fourth down. Dylan York ended up taking a 23-yard loss following a botched lateral pass.

In the third, Winnacunnet stopped another Bedford drive inside the red zone. Renaldo Gordon tackled York for a loss, and then sacked Caparell on fourth-and-8, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Christian Dyer.

What was more impressive, the fact Winnacunnet rushed the ball so effectively or the fact it shut down Bedford's offense?

“I was really happy with the defense. I can say it was one of the best defensive games we've played in a long time,” said Warriors coach Ron Auffant, whose team limited Bedford to 70 yards in the first half and 185 overall. “It's that bend-don't-break philosophy. Don't give up big plays.”

Franzoso had 107 yards by halftime, taking advantage of superb blocking from senior captains Dyer (6-foot-4, 280 pounds) and Jordan Cutting (6-foot-2, 280 pounds). Dyer, a tackle, and Cutting, a are are both getting looks from college programs, including the University of New Hampshire.

“Those guys are our bread and butter. The whole defense came up big, especially at the end with some sacks. They didn't give up big plays, and they tightened up,” Auffant said.

Winnacunnet put up 41 points against Souhegan of Amherst last week, but this game stayed 7-0 until Veasna fired a scoring slant pass to Witt with 10:01 remaining in the fourth. The conversion pass failed.

Veasna completed five of nine passing attempts for 88 yards. Caparell went 11-for-24 and racked up 115 yards passing. A facemask at the end of regulation allowed the Bulldogs to attempt one more play, and they made it count as Caparell spotted Vailas.

“I'm really proud. We want our guys to play four quarters of football, and they didn't give up,” Bedford coach Kurt Hines said. “We had some calls I shouldn't have made. We had some mental mistakes. (Winnacunnet) is a very good program, and we will see them again.”
