College Sports Roundup: Late goal lifts SNHU men over Dowling

Senior Chris Tsonis scored with 15 seconds remaining to lift sixth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University to a 1-0 men's soccer win over Dowling College Saturday in Brookhaven. N.Y.

Tsonis took a pass from sophomore Mohamed Toufik and sent a shot on net that trickled past Dowling keeper Chris Friedl.

SNHU's best chance up to that point had come in the 42nd minute when Kenny Doublette found himself one-on-one with Friedl, but the keeper was able to turn aside the shot.

SNHU goalie Dom DiMaggio made three saves to post his second shutout of the season.

Southern New Hampshire (3-0) returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Merrimack College for the Northeast-10 opener at 7 p.m.

Men's soccer

Amherst 6, Colby-Sawyer 0: Colby-Sawyer played its second straight ranked team, falling to No. 5 Amherst in New London Saturday.

Senior Spencer Noon netted a hat trick for the Lord Jeffs (1-0). Senior Federico Sucre, junior Jae Heo, and junior Max Fikke each added a goal.

Colby-Sawyer (1-3) keeper Marc-Andre Parent (South Yarmouth, Mass.) made three saves in the loss.

Norwich 4, Rivier 0: Norwich University scored a goal in the first minute of play and was on its way in GNAC action in Nashua Saturday.

Norwich got goals from Wesley Keslin, Austen McGuire, Ryan Campbell and Joe Young. Rivier (0-2) senior goalkeeper Matthew St. Peter stopped 18 of the 22 shots he faced.

Men's cross country

Dartmouth Invitational: At Hanover, the Big Green's Will Geoghegan edged Syracuse's Joe Whelan by 0.02 to post a second-place time of 24:50.10. The Orange won the team competition, and Dartmouth was second.

Philip Shacklette Invitational: At Goffstown, Kevin Morse placed 15th overall in 28:46.5 to lead St. Anselm to a fifth-place finish in the 8K race. Southern New Hampshire ended sixth.

Women's soccer

SNHU 2, Adelphi 1: Ashley Jaskula scored in the 88th minute to snap a tie and lift Southern New Hampshire to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Adelphi in Northeast-10 Conference play at Larkin Field in Manchester Saturday.

At 3-1, the Penmen are off to their best start since 2003.

The teams played to a scoreless first half before the Panthers took a 1-0 lead on a Donna Liotine goal. But SNHU , which controlled the ball for the majority of the half, found the equalizer when Gabby Cappello broke through the defense and scored at 79 minutes.

Penmen keeper Maggie Weldon of Manchester made two saves in the victory.

Roger Williams 1, Keene State 0 (2ot): At Keene, Kristen Tetreault scored with 12 to play in the second overetime to decide the outcome. KSC outshot its rival, 25-10.

Bridgewater State 4, Plymouth State 2: At Plymouth, the Panthers goals came from Laura Davis and Emily Bell of Derry.

New Haven 4, St. Anselm 1: At Manchester, Hooksett's Lindsay Johnson scored for the 1-2 Hawks, spoiling the Chargers shutout bid, with 23 seconds left in the game.

Colby-Sawyer 4, Mount Holyoke 0: At New London, the Chargers received goals from Ashley Reis, Laurel Bauer of Bradford, Sarah Little and Colleen Coburn.

Wentworth 1, New England College 0: At Boston, Tricia Sardagnola stopped seven of the eight shots she faced.

Maine Maritime 4, Daniel Webster 1: At Nashua, Alexis Pavelock scored the Eagles (1-1) lone goal.

Field hockey

St. Anselm 5, AIC 2: At Goffstown, Kristina Katsikis scored two goals and Elizabeth Sears handed out a pair of assists in the the Hawks first win of the season (1-3).

LIU Post 4, Franklin Pierce 0: At Rindge, Keliann Margiotta scored twice and added an assist for the No. 6 Pioneers. Sarah Cote made 12 saves for the 2-1 Ravens.

Terrapin Invitational: At College Park, Md., Alex McMackin scored twice as American blanked Dartmouth, 3-0. Thornton's Jenna Stearns hase two saves for the Big Green.

Plymouth State 4, Western Conn. State 1: At Danbury, Conn., Leah Kenison-Marvin of Center Tuftonboro scored twice in the Panthers LEC opener. Kristen Morris and Emily Davis of Boscawen also scored, and goalie Hilary Lemelin of Milan made five saves.

New England College 4, Gordon 3 (ot): At Wenham, Mass., Rachel Carnaroli scored two goals including the game-winner in the 81st minute. Enfield's Courtney Duquette made 16 saves in the win.

Endicott 8, Colby-Sawyer 1: At New London, Bristol's Abbey Symonds scored her first collegiate goal for the 1-2 Chargers.

Elms 6, Rivier 2: At Nashua, Kate Adinolfo of Manchester and Kristen Tyler of Thornton scored for the Raiders.

Women's cross country

Dartmouth Invitational: At Hanover, Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino paced the 6K field by 35 seconds, winning in 20:48.0. Dartmouth finished second to defending national champion Georgetown.

Shacklette Invitational: At Goffstown, Merrimack's Allyn Doyle (19:48) scored a sixth-place finish for second-place St. Anselm in the 5K competition. Madeline Hayes was fourth (19:42) for fourth-place Southern New Hampshire, and Daniel Webster seventh.

Nassaney Invitational: At Smithfield, R.I., Franklin Pierce, the lone non-Division I team in the field, finished 17th. Shannon Lozier was the top-finisher for FPU.

Women's Volleyball

Dartmouth: At Fairfield, Conn., the Big Green swept Central Florida, 3-0, after falling to Sacred Heart, 0-3. Paige Caridi tallied 13 kills and 10 digs, and Kayden Cook added 29 assists and 12 digs against UCF.

Southern New Hampshire: At Manchester, the Penmen lost to New York Institute of Technology, 3-1, before beating Post, 3-1.Emma Houlihan had 22 kills in the first match, and Erica Solomon had 16 kills and nine digs in the second match.

Keene State: At Providence, R.I., Keene State lost to both Johnson & Wales and Springfield, despite the play of Angela Silveri (13 kills) and Alexis Michal of Windham (17 assists, 20 digs).

Bridgeport 3, St. Anselm 0: At Bridgeport, Conn., Shannon Douglas of Rochester had five kills and five digs for the Hawks (3-2).

Daniel Webster: At Nashua, DWC swept Mount Ida, 3-0, before falling to Wentworth, 3-2. Samantha Hill of Hudson had nine kills and seven digs in the opener, while Chelsey Crawford managed 12 kills in the nightcap.

Colby-Sawyer 3, Norwich 0: At New London, Jackie Keating pounded 14 kills and Laura Smolinski recorded 33 assists.

Women's Tennis

Colby-Sawyer 8, Lyndon State 0: At New London, Ashlyn Ramsay, Charlotte Horton, Claire Toffey, Donna Gordon and Oxana Tkachenko each posted singles victories.

Bridgewater State 8, Plymouth State 1: At Bridgewater, Mass., the Panthers point came from Nitsa Ioannides at No. 3 singles.

Postponements

Franklin Pierce: Saturday's home soccer match against Assumption was rescheduled for this afternoon at 2 p.m.
