College Sports Roundup -- Hawk men win first; Franklin Pierce string snapped
Freshman Sean Smith of Hampstead scored a goal off a corner kick in the 59th minute as the St. Anselm College men's soccer team earned its first victory Tuesday with a surprising 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference decision against previously unbeaten Saint Michael's College in Manchester.
The Hawks are 1-3 while the Purple Knights fell to 4-1.
George Lamptey got the Hawks on the board before halftime with a penalty kick goal as his shot found the top left corner of the net past Saint Michael's goalkeeper Logan Kingman.
The goal was set-up by Joseph Rispoli who was tripped up after gaining possession on a feed from Kevin Greene of Londonderry.
Smith made it 2-0 at the 58:47 on a pass from Alex Germaine of Derry.
St. Anselm goalkeeper Eric Moriarty of Center Harbor had eight saves.
UMass-Lowell 3, Franklin Pierce 2: In Lowell, Mass., the No. 6 nationally-ranked Ravens saw their regular season unbeaten streak snapped at 30. The Ravens were 28-0-2 during that stretch. Their 34-game consecutive NE-10 regular season unbeaten streak (31-0-3) was also halted Tuesday night.
FPU dropped to 2-1 overall this season.
SNHU 2, Merrimack 1: In North Andover, Mass., Chris Tsonis recorded his third straight game-winning goal with just over 10 minutes left. The Penmen remained unbeaten at 4-0 and 1-0 in the NE-10.
Keegan Campbell lofted a ball into the box on a set piece that was headed home by Tsonis for his fourth goal and third game-winning goal of the season.
