Lee USA Speedway concluded its regular season Friday and crowned four champions. Tommy Tombarello Jr. of Haverhill, Mass., driver of the Old Stage Campground No. 98, took the Benson Lumber and Hardware Small Block Supers title. JR Baril of Haverhill, who already has some Lee USA championship trophies at home, is the 2012 Prime Storage Late Model Sportsman king.
Tombarello basically had to show up to seal the Small Block Supers deal after winning three races and scoring many top-five finishes throughout the year. He had a tough night at the Supers’ big Moneybags 100 race, but he was solid almost every other week.
ISMA competitor Justin Belfiore is Tombarello’s crew chief. Team members include Al Castro, Craig Avro, Adam Douphinette and Vinny Greco.
“It’s been a great year,” Tombarello said. “Wayne Helliwell, (Friday’s feature winner and the New Hampshire NASCAR points leader), Mike Netishen, PJ Stergios and Mike Ordway Jr. were all tough competitors. All the drivers have a lot of respect for each other, which makes for a good division.”
Tombarello credited Dave Storey of Plaistow for his support of the Small Block Supers specifically and Lee in general. “He really stepped up to help us,” Tobarello said. “He got the sponsor and he’s stuck by us and done a lot of great things, including helping to bring in Buzzie Bezanson as the tech inspector.”
Storey and Bezanson have been supportive of each other’s racing habit since before the peak of the original American Canadian Tour in the early ’90s.
Jim Storey/Hobby Stocks and Jake Rheaume of Rochester/Ironman also won divisional championships.
The N.E. Classic Lites (Dwarf cars) were also at Lee. George Helliwell of Derry came out on top, with Robbie Bryant second and Billy Osborne of Plaistow third. This Saturday, the Classic Lites are at Star Speedway.
It was a record-breaking day for Russ Wood of Pelham on Sunday at Star, when ISMA resumed the Star Classic after rain halted the race 35 laps in the night before. Wood is now the all-time Classic winner (7), breaking a tie with Bentley Warren. “A special thanks to Byrne Towing, Sweet Manufacturing, JWJ Industries, and my car owner, Brian Allegresso,” Wood said. “We have a new Dowker motor out of Charlotte, Michigan. That was awesome.”
ISMA’s next stop is at Seekonk (Mass.) Saturday, Sept. 29. That race card includes the NEMA Midget Boston Louie Classic.
The Star Modified championship is on the line Saturday. It’s down to Richard Savary of Canton, Mass., Jacob Dore of Alfred, Maine, and defending champion Josh Cantara, a UNH engineering graduate from Sanford, Maine.
The Granite State Pro Stock Series John Hoyt Memorial was rained out at Monadnock. It has been rescheduled for Sept. 29. This weekend, Russ Hersey of Swanzey will try to nail down the Sportsman Modified title. He leads Bill Kimball of Bennington by 32 points. It’s still “ladies only” at the top of the Mini Stock division. Kim Rivet of Chicopee, Mass., is in the catbird seat, followed by Beth Adams of North Swanzey and Julia Raymond. Mike Stebbins of Winchester is fourth in points.
Canaan Asphalt doubles up this weekend. Friday is S. K. Bean Garage Championship Night. Sunday afternoon, Canaan hosts the Granite State Pro Stock Series.
Hudson Speedway is now in autumn mode. Post time Sunday is 1:03 p.m. Outlaws, Rookies, Roadrunners, Thunder Lights and N.E. V-6 Modifieds are slated. The PASS Super Late Models had their 150-lap rained out at White Mountain. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22, on championship night.
The names are in for the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sept. 22 at 4:30 p.m. Thirty-two drivers are on the list, including Granite Staters Randy Potter of Groveton, ACT points leader Helliwell (the Invitational is not a points race), Twin State champion Guy Caron and Joey Polewarczyk Jr. of Hudson. “Joey Pole” placed third over the weekend in the Showdown at Chaudiere in Quebec.
Seven Vermonters got the call — defending champion Brian Hoar, veteran Jamie Aubie, rookie standout Jimmy Hebert, Thunder Road champion Nick Sweet, Jean-Paul Cyr and Scott Dragon.
Eddie MacDonald is also on the list, and for wagering purposes he belongs at the top of it. MacDonald has won two of the three ACT Invitationals to date. Both times he won, Sweet was second.
Qualifying for the Valenti Modified Series begins at 6:15 tomorrow night at Stafford Motor Speedway.
Bring a LaValley’s Building Supply receipt to Twin State Speedway in Claremont on Saturday and get in for $5.
