St. Anselm gridders beaten under the lights
GOFFSTOWN — The first night game at Grappone Stadium did not go as planned for the St. Anselm football team Friday night.
The Hawks' season-opening losing streak was extended to three games as Stonehill College pulled away for a 35-20 Northeast-10 win to retain the “Ol' Bronze Hawk.” The Skyhawks have held the trophy ever since it was unveiled in 2006.
The Hawks (0-3, 0-2) were hosting their first-ever game under the new lights at Grappone Stadium and seemed poised to shine in the spotlight as they grabbed a 20-14 lead less than two minutes into the second half when Ethan Sylvain picked off a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. However, the Skyhawks (2-1, 2-0) marched 73 yards for a touchdown on their ensuing possession and went ahead when freshman Steve Grzywacz of Manchester booted the extra point.
Grzywacz, a Central High product, was named the Northeast-10 rookie of the week earlier in the week. He converted all five of his extra point attempts in the game.
Stonehill salted the game away with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Stephen Cuipa of Merrimack (Bishop Guertin) made the start for the Hawks and hooked up with Justin Bernard on a 35-yard scoring strike at 5:47 of the first quarter for St. Anselm's first touchdown.
Bernard, a red-shirt sophomore, also threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Gomes to put the Hawks ahead 13-7 midway through the second quarter.
Bernard finished with seven catches for 113 yards.
The Hawks will try to snap a six-game losing streak that dates back to last year when they travel to face New Haven next Saturday.
The “Battle for the Ol' Bronze Hawk” has been a one-sided affair.
The Skyhawks have won all seven contests between the teams in the series, outscoring the Hawks by a margin of 257-98.
