MANCHESTER — Manchester Memorial put together an eight-play, 55-yard scoring drive on its opening possession Friday night, but then its offense pretty much disappeared.
Memorial didn't pick up another first down until 6:43 remained in the third quarter, and that came courtesy of a Concord penalty.
Memorial's only other TD came with 13.4 seconds to play — long after the outcome had been determined — as the Crimson Tide rolled to a 35-13 victory.
“The offensive line didn't block tonight,” Memorial coach Peter Colcord said. “We figured that would be our strength, and is has been, but it was a complete letdown of my offensive line tonight. We couldn't run the ball. (Quarterback) Stephen Deane had nowhere to go, he had no time. I've never seen my offensive line perform that badly.”
Deane capped Memorial's first possession with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Deon Ball, but spent much of the game running away from Crimson Tide defenders. Concord, which led 20-6 at halftime, sacked Deane four times.
“We blew a coverage on that long touchdown pass, but after that we played like we were capable of playing,” Concord coach Eric Brown said. “Memorial is bigger than us, but we used our speed and quickness to get to the ball and make some things happen. I'm really pleased defensively.”
The victory raised Concord's record to 2-1 overall, and 1-1 in Division I. Memorial dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in Division II.
Concord running back Tolbert Nemo rushed for a game-high 117 yards on 19 carries. He tied the score on a 2-yard run with 5:19 left in the first quarter.
The Crimson Tide also received two first-half touchdown passes from quarterback Marc Gaudet: a 32-yarder to Nicholas Comeau, and a 19-yard completion to Seimou Smith with 40.3 seconds left in the half.
Gaudet, who added a 37-yard TD run early in the third quarter, completed 8 of 14 attempts for 106 yards. Concord's other touchdown came on a 7-yard run by backup quarterback Robert Law.
“Offensively, we still have to take care of some penalties and cut down on mistakes, but it was good. We were happy. We scored some points and finished some drives, which we sometimes don't do,” Brown said. “The balance we showed is exactly what we're striving for.
“It was a big win. We talked this week about how important this was because it's another Division I game, but we still got a ways to go.”
Memorial's final TD came on a 6-yard pass from backup quarterback Devon Collier to Abdul Kanu.
The final score wasn't the only bad news for Memorial. Colcord said junior running back Peter Abood suffered a broken collarbone in the fourth quarter and will miss the rest of the season. Abood gained 60 yards on five carries. He had a 54-yard run that set up Memorial's second touchdown.
“We had a pretty decent week of practice with the plays we were running,” Colcord said. “We came in confident we could execute. It was simple blocking and tackling and we didn't do it.”
