College Sports Roundup: No. 6 FPC tips No. 3 SNHU
Le-Shaun Young converted a header off a free kick and No. 6 Franklin Pierce edged No. 3 Southern New Hampshire, 1-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer match in Rindge Saturday night.
Young’s goal, his first of the season, came at 74:28 and improved the Ravens to 4-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference. Southern New Hampshire slipped to 4-2-0 and 1-2-0.
The goal was set up by FPU teammate Lukas Cramer.
Winning keeper Jake Wright made three saves in notching the shutout, while Penmen goalie Dom Dimaggio stopped one shot.
Southern New Hampshire finished with a dozen shots on goal while FPU had 11.
Men's Soccer
New Hampshire 1, Massachusetts 1 (2 ot): At Durham, the Wildcats Jordan Thomas and Massachusetts Brett Canepa traded goals during regulation. The Thomas goal resulted from a penalty kick. The Minutemen forced UNH keeper Travis Worra to make seven saves, while Massachusetts goalie Brian Frame ended with one save. Colby-Sawyer College and Daniel Webster College played to a 2-2 tie in non-conference men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon in New London.
Daniel Webster (0-4-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on a Colby-Sawyer own goal.
The Chargers (1-4-1) knotted the game at 1-1 just over a minute later when junior Drew Pehoviak took a feed from sophomore Alex Ortega and scored.
The game remained tied until the 18th minute of the second half when the Eagles went ahead 2-1 on a goal from senior Eliot Kilgore (Milford).
Colby-Sawyer sophomore Ram Khalsa pulled the Chargers even again at the 75:00 mark after scoring off a feed from freshman Isaac Nichols.
Men’s soccer
Keene State 3, UMass-Boston 1: The Owls opened Little East Conference play with a win over UMass-Boston at Owl Athletic Complex in Keene Saturday.
The Owls (4-2 overall) took a 1-0 lead at the 24:04 mark on a direct kick goal by senior Blake Nyman. Junior Stefanos Galouzis tied the game for UMass-Boston (2-3-1, 0-1 LEC) six minutes later.
Freshman Rushane Kelley (Keene) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, (his second of the season) with seven minutes to play in the first half.
Senior Joe Senecal scored an insurance goal for KSC on a penalty kick at the 11:29 mark of the second half.
St. Anselm 2, Le Moyne 1: Senior captain Maximillian Glebocki netted a pair of goals as the Hawks won at home in Manchester Saturday.
St. Anselm (2-31) struck first at 29:32 when Brian Ayers sent a direct kick into the middle of the box to find Glebocki for a header into the right side of the net past Le Moyne goalkeeper Matthew Silva.
The Dolphins tied the game in the 51st minute when Cal Finch scored, but the Hawks reclaimed the lead with 10:25 remaining in the game when George Lamptey crossed the ball into the middle of the box to find Glebocki for another header into the back of the net.
Rivier 1, Anna Maria 1: Despite being outshot 29-7, Rivier was able to escape with a draw at Paxton, Mass. Saturday. Freshman midfielder Devaunte Maynes scored the Anna Maria goal on a penalty kick at 32:06. Freshman midfielder Nico Spadorcia tied the game for the Raiders at 41:10 with an unassisted breakaway goal.
Men’s tennis
Southern New Hampshire 9, Le Moyne 0: The Penmen earned their second win of the season Saturday morning with a sweep of Le Moyne College in Manchester. Mitch Dobek, Mike Wallace and Jared Wright picked up singles wins for SNHU.
Men's cross country
Southern New Hampshire: The Penmen competed in the UMass Dartmouth 8k run Saturday in Dartmouth, Mass., finishing 37th out of 39 teams.
Keene State: The Owls competed in the UMass-Amherst Minuteman Invitational Saturday in Amherst, Mass.
Keene State finished fifth in the five-team men’s field with 129 points. Senior Thomas Paquette was the top finisher for the Owls, finishing eighth with a time of 24:41 on the five mile course.
Women's Soccer
SNHU 1, St. Rose 1: Southern New Hampshire University and defending national champion and top-ranked Saint Rose battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in Northeast-10 women’s soccer Saturday afternoon at Albany, N.Y.
The Penmen, who played in their third overtime game of the season, now stand 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in NE-10 play, while the Golden Knights are 4-0-1 and 2-0-1.
Faced with a one-goal deficit 60 minutes into the match, Bethi Ledoux tied the game when her shot from 30 yards snuck in under the crossbar.
Saint Rose grabbed a 1-0 lead just under 10 minutes into the second frame as Carmelina Puopolo scored off a feed from Kelly Johnson.
The Penmen put a flurry of shots on the Saint Rose goal late in the second overtime. Host keeper Jessica Gerski stopped shots by Kaleigh Roberge of Manchester and Morgan Branco midway through the period, while Roberge lofted an attempt with nine seconds remaining in the game that glanced off the crossbar.
Maggie Weldon of Manchester made seven saves for SNHU to preserve the tie while Gerski finished with two saves. Saint Rose outshot the Penmen 20-10 and generated an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
UMass-Dartmouth 3, Plymouth State 2 (2 ot): At North Dartmouth, Mass., Maura Goncalves scored the game-winner in the 105th minute. Molly Todd of Epsom and Emily Bell of Derry scored for PSU.
UMass-Boston 5, Keene State 0: At Boston, the Beacons, coached by former KSC all-America and assistant coach Amy Zombeck, tallied their first ever win (1-1-15) over the Owls.
Rivier 9, Anna Maria 0: At Paxton, Mass., Christina Parent of Loudon and Christa Naso of Londonderry each scored two goals.
Field hockey
Princeton 4, Dartmouth 1: At Princeton, N.J., the No. 2 Tigers posted a 3-0 advantage before Lisa Masini netted the Big Green’s goal. Dartmouth is 1-4.
Keene State 5, Fitchburg State 0: At Fitchburg, Mass., Aimee Donaruma scored two goals as the Owls outshot the Falcons, 31-10.
Bentley 3, Franklin Pierce 0: At Waltham, Mass., Sarah Cote made nine saves but FPU fell to 2-3.
Colby-Sawyer 1, Elms 0 (ot): At Chicopee, Mass., Rebecca Perley of Sandown scored three minutes into overtime.
Assumption 4, St. Michael’s 3 (ot): At Colchester, Vt., Sarah Frahm of Salem scored the overtime goal.
Women's cross country
UMass-Dartmouth Invitational: At Dartmouth, Mass., Madeline Hayes ran a personal-best and program second fastest 5K time of 18:52 (12th overall) to help SNHU to a 21st place finish out of 38 teams. FPU finished 27th as Manchester’s Alyssa Lambert placed 150 in 20:57.65.
Minuteman Invitational: At Amherst, Mass., Keene State finished sixth with 168 points and Maggie Fitter ran 33rd in 19:43.
Women's Volleyball
Franklin Pierce 3, Post 0: At Rindge, Lina Kleinschmidt had 13 kills and five blocks for the 5-5 Ravens.
Southern New Hampshire: At Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., the Penmen improved to 5-4 with twin 3-0 wins over Goldey-Beacom and Mercy colleges. Catherine Cotton had 37 and 26 assists in the doubleheader.
Saint Rose 3, St. Anselm 0: At Albany, N.Y., the Hawks were downed in three sets.
Keene State: At Providence, R.I., the Owls beat Rhode Island College and Westfield State. Libero Sammy Dormio had nine kills and 18 digs against RIC.
Plymouth State: At Danbury, Conn., the Panthers beat Lasell but lost to Western Connecticut State. Cassie Pelton of Brookline recorded 21 digs.
Buffalo Blue and White Tournament: At Buffalo, N.Y., Dartmouth lost to Syracuse and Hartford by 3-1 scores and fell to 1-8. Elisa Scudder was selected to the all-tourney team.
