Airport taps consultant on solar panel problem
MANCHESTER — Officials at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport are working with a national solar design consultant to find a permanent solution to glare from recently installed solar panels shining into the FAA control tower.
“Yes, we are hopeful to have the consultant’s report with specific recommendations in late October,” Deputy Airport Director Brian O’Neill said in an email last week. “No resolution on who’s paying for the remedy at this point. We are working closely with the FAA and the contractor in that regard.”
In August, airport workers draped tarps over about 25 percent of a solar-power array installed on top of the airport parking garage this year. The system went online in early August.
According to the FAA last week, the glare from the solar panels is shining into the area where air traffic controllers work, interfering with their line of sight on some parts of the runway.
O’Neill said “the tarps are occasionally redeployed to account for the change in the sun’s path.”
