Barktoberfest events aim to fundraise for humane society

OSSIPEE — The Lakes Region Humane Society is hosting a family event that is aimed at getting dogs and their owners moving together and showcasing their best tricks.

The eighth annual Barktoberfest celebration and Woofe-Minster Walk will be held — rain or shine — Sept. 29 on the shelter grounds at 11 Old Route 28 in Ossipee.

Barktoberfest includes a one-mile fundraising Woofe-Minster Walk, contests and games, and prizes and trophies for walkers who raise the most money. Registration for the Woofe-Minster Walk begins at 10:30 a.m. at the shelter grounds and the walk starts at 11 a.m. Walkers are asked to attract sponsors and donors to assist in raising funds to help the shelter’s homeless and neglected animals. Individuals can walk with their dog or in memory of a beloved pet of any kind. Walkers who raise $50 or more will receive a special Barktoberfest T-shirt (while supplies last). Registration and sponsor forms are available at: O’Brien’s Pet Supplies and Dog Training, Winni Paw Station and the Lakes Region Humane Society, or by calling LRHS board member Lindy Viscio at 569-0436.

Have a zany dog outfit or canine trick to show off? After the walk, dog owners will have a chance to demonstrate their dog’s unique talent by entering them in a number of fun games and contests. Categories include best catcher, best costume, best trick, best singer, and fastest tail wagger. The competitions will take place on shelter grounds.

From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Lakes Region Humane Society volunteers will host a cookout, with grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and other food and refreshments for sale. Dog treats and plenty of water will be available.

All dogs participating in Barktoberfest must be leashed, licensed and up-to-date on vaccinations. Flex leads are not allowed. No other animals may attend the event. An adult must accompany children under 12. Walkers under the age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign their Woofe-Minster Walk registration and donation form. All proceeds from Barktoberfest will support the Lakes Region Humane Society. If possible, bring a completed registration form and a $10 registration fee to the LRHS tent by 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 29, or mail to LRHS, P.O. Box 655, Ossipee, N.H. 03864. For more information, call Lindy Viscio at 569-0436.
