Video production business gets zoning approval

LONDONDERRY — Following a brief public hearing before the Zoning Board on Wednesday night, a woman’s proposal to move her video production business into her Londonderry home was a wrap.

Suzanne DeWolf, owner of Masterpiece Video Productions, appeared before the board to request a special exception allowing her to operate her business out of her 33 Hardy Road home.

DeWolf has run her business, which specializes in making event and wedding videos for clients around New England, for more than 25 years.

Right now, production and editing takes place primarily at a Nashua office, though her hope is to move all operations into her home.

With only three members of the ZBA present at this week’s meeting, a 3-0 vote was necessary for approval. Normally, with a quorum of five members present, a simple majority is needed to attain approval.

DeWolf was given the option of rescheduling the public hearing to another date when more board members were present but ultimately opted to move forward.

Among the requests made was approval of a 3-square-foot sign and operations limited to one room in the basement. Clients would occasionally visit her at home by appointment for consultations or to pick up their finished projects.

Deliveries of supplies would be made at her home from time to time, though she noted such instances would be infrequent.

“It’s pretty seasonal,” she said of her business. “In the wintertime, I don’t do as many productions.”

She said she has no immediate plans to hire additional help, though she hasn’t ruled out the possibility for the future.

“I’d like to get more business,” she said. “Right now I only make one or two projects a month. I’m hoping to be more busy.”

Neighbor Michael Marks, who lives across the street from DeWolf, said he had some minor concerns about the proposed signage.

Board members told him that a sign DeWolf requested was perfectly legal since it’s a non-illuminated sign and other home businesses located in the town’s residential neighborhoods already have similar signs.

No one else from the public offered comment.

“Something like this is something we might not even know about other than the sign,” board member Larry O’Sullivan said. “So I don’t have any issues with this application.”

The board unanimously approved DeWolf’s application.
