Storm knocks out powers to thousands in NH, dumps 5 inches of rain in North Country
About 1,200 businesses and households were without power early Wednesday morning after an overnight storm with 40-mph wind gusts and more than 5 inches of rain falling on Pinkham Notch.
At the height of the storm, about 12,000 households lost power. By 6:45 am. Wednesday, the lights were back on for all but about 1,150 customers: PSNH, 689; N.H. Electric Co-op, 447, and Unitil, 17.
The outages were scattered across the state, with the majority in the Keene, Winchester area in the southwest and in Franklin and Salisbury in central New Hampshire.
Meteorologist Bob Marine with the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, said 5.28 inches of rain fell on Pinkham Notch, while 4.15 inches of rain was recorded in Jackson, another northern town. Most communities had from three-quarters of an inch to 2 inches of rain, he said.
Marine said there were no flooding problems.
