Division I Boys Soccer - Crusaders try to find their way through inconsistencies
The Crusaders and Florek, however, believe they have the potential to overcome the mediocre beginning.
As of Monday, Sept. 17, Memorial is 2-4 on the season, earning wins over both Salem and Dover High Schools.
Although the season is still relatively young, Florek understands that his team needs to start stringing together some wins and soon.
“We're struggling a little bit,” said Florek. “The team is slowly gelling together and everybody has a very good attitude.”
That positive attitude will go a long way in this transitional year for both Florek and the Crusaders.
Florek, who had assistant coached for the last eight years on Manchester rival Central High's staff, knows that his new team has the talent to make the postseason.
Seniors Josh Belanger, Cam Pellerin and Matt Cortic have stepped up both on and off the field.
Goalkeeper Gary Archaubault is also in charge of Memorial's postseason fate this year as he constantly impresses between the pipes for the Crusaders.
“(He is) probably one of our best players,” said Florek “The goal is always, for us, to make the tournament.”
Last season, Memorial lost in the first round of the Division I tournament to Bishop Guertin, a game Florek had attended.
Florek sees potential in the squad he has taken over at Memorial, but he knows that potential is not enough when it comes to Division I soccer.
The team will need to play together, as a cohesive unit, to make an impact this season.
Memorial has lost close games through missed opportunities and mistakes that, in hindsight, could have prevented.
Out of its four losses on the season, Memorial was shut out in three.
While Belanger and Archaubault may stop the opposing squad's offense attacks, the Crusaders need to focus on earning goals.
Florek plans to keep it simple in order to reach his players.
“(We need) to keep focused. Don't get too high, don't get too low, just keep kind of a steady line and take one game at a time,” said Florek.
