Biden, in NH, takes aim at Romney and Ryan

HANOVER — Vice President Joe Biden echoed President Barack Obama’s 14-year-old redistribution-of-wealth remarks speaking to students at Dartmouth College on Friday afternoon, saying America does well, “when everyone has a fair shot.”

He also said he had a message for Republican candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan: “It is never a good bet to bet against the American people,” Biden said, referring to the recently release remarks about the “47 percent” made by Romney at a fundraiser in May.

“My job is not to worry about those people,” he quoted Romney, evoking boos from the crowd.

“No, I don’t need your boos. I need your help,” Biden said and urging them to get out and vote this November. “Think about it. Think about your potential candidates. This is not your father’s Republican party.”

Biden named several groups of people that rely on federal programs — the senior citizens who receive Medicare, veterans who receives VA services, college students who receives grants and loans.

Biden said there is no culture of dependency in this country and American’s don’t see themselves as victims.

“How could he be so profoundly wrong about America,” Biden said about Romney.

“We believe America does well, America’s always prospered when hard work is rewarded. When everyone has a fair shot. Everyone plays by the same rules. Everyone has a fair shake. Everyone is held accountable, rich and poor,” Biden said.

After Biden’s speech Romney’s campaign released this statement: “With record levels of poverty, high unemployment, and falling incomes, Americans know they’re not better off than they were four years ago. They are looking for a new direction. President Obama yesterday admitted he can’t change Washington, and Vice President Biden — having spent the last four decades in Washington — can’t either. Mitt Romney will be a president for 100 percent of Americans, with a plan for a stronger middle class that adds millions of jobs, gets our economy growing, and results in more upward mobility, not government dependency.”

Before their appearance at Dartmouth, the Bidens stopped at the Spring Ledge Farm Stand in New London shortly after noon.

As they climbed out of their car in the motorcade, Biden, wearing sunglasses, a striped dress shirt and blue blazer, shook hands with owner Greg Berger, who began showing the vice president and his wife the farm’s gourd selection.

Inside the store at the farm stand, the Bidens continued to greet shoppers, a number of whom asked to take pictures with the vice president. “Thank you so much,” said one woman. “You are so fit.”

Biden laughed. “Will you tell my wife that?” he joked. “She makes me feel bad. She gets up at 6:30 in the morning and goes to a barre class.”
