MANCHESTER — Another easy bout went into the win column Thursday night for Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade.
The former United States Olympian, ranked No. 4 by the IBF, polished off Alexis “Hurricane” Hlores with a TKO decision in the second round of a scheduled 10-round middleweight bout at the 11th annual Fight to Educate before about 1,000 fans at Verizon Wireless Arena.
Andrade improved to 18-0 with 13 knockouts, but Thursday night's win against a 364th-ranked opponent only created more criticism for the Providence, R.I., boxer.
In his last four bouts, all against opponents ranked over 100, Andrade has boxed just a total of eight rounds.
Critics have said the 24-year-old talent needs better competition, something Andrade says is not his fault.
Thursday night after the fight, he called out former WBO junior middleweight champion Sergei Dzinziruk, who currently carries a 37-1 record with 24 KOs.
“That's a guy that would look good on my resume,” declared Andrade.”He's lost only once, to the best, Sergio Martinez.”
Andrade said he was feeling out Hlores, who was staggered with a left jab in the first round.
“I wanted to see what he was capable of doing in the first round,” said Andrade. “He wasn't taking my jabs too well and in the second round, I just showed my power. I showcased it and he went down.”
Hlores had two standing eight counts in the second round, the first off a straight left jab. But he couldn't survive the round after taking a right hook that left him dazed, and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight.
In the other pro bout, Chris Gilbert of Windsor, Vt., remained undefeated after he registered a fourth-round knockout of Antonio Chaves Fernandez of Quincy, Mass., in a scheduled six round welterweight fight.
Gilbert is 5-0 with four knockouts while Fernandez is 2-8-1.
Six three-round amateur bouts took place, including a matchup between Keenan Manzi of Keene and Rory Stapleton of Lancaster in a light welterweight match.
Each round was 90 seconds long and both fighters managed to land a few punches. In a match that could have gone either way, the judges awarded the decision to Stapleton.
Wayne Stearns of Searsport, Maine, got the decision over Angel Tricoche of Haverhill, Mass., in a light flyweight bout.
In another light welterweight bout, Zack Morel of New Hampton outlasted Phil Kyser of Searsport, Maine, while in a heavyweight tilt, Joel Bishop of Searsport, Maine, beat John Rosa of Lawrence, Mass.
In a light heavyweight bout featuring two boxers from Claremont, Nico Clow defeated Richie Ford. Tevin Aleau of Providence decisioned Brandon Berry of Searsport, Maine, in a super welterweight match.
