Derry man struck and killed by SUV in Chester
CHESTER — A 75-year-old Derry man was killed when he was struck by an SUV in the parking lot of a variety store on Raymond Road Saturday afternoon.
According to police, the victim, identified as Robert Young of Derry, was on his way into Your Variety Store when he walked behind a GMC Yukon driven by Karen Sheley, 45, of Chester.
Sheley was backing up, noticed the pedestrian behind her and attempted to brake her vehicle, police said. Instead, she hit the gas pedal, which caused her vehicle to accelerate, strike Young and push him into a large ice cooler.
Police said Young was taken by ambulance to Elliot Hospital in Manchester, where he was pronounced dead.
Sheley was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry to be checked.
The New Hampshire state police Technical Accident Reconstruction unit is investigating the accident.
