NH College Football Roundup: Bounce goes for Dartmouth
WORCESTER, Mass. — A forced fumble with 11 seconds left set the stage for Riley Lyons to kick the game-winning field goal with one second on the clock Saturday as Dartmouth upended Holy Cross, 13-10, in a non-conference game at Fitton Field.
The win was the second straight to start the season for the Big Green (2-0) — something they have done just one other time since 1996 — and marks their fifth straight win. The streak, which started at the end of last season, is the longest in 15 years for Dartmouth.
Freshman cornerback Vernon Harris knocked the ball out of the hands of the Crusaders’ Sam Auffant after a short pass inside Holy Cross territory. A 17-yard pass from Alex Park to Ryan McManus set up Lyons for a 31-yard field goal, his second field goal of the game.
“I’ve never had the opportunity to kick a game-winner, even in high school,” Lyons said. “Coach (Buddy) Teevens told me during the timeout, ‘This is why you play the game.’ I had been hoping for an opportunity like this, though I would certainly welcome winning by a larger margin. But our defense made a big play and the pass to Ryan put me in a good position to make the kick.”
The Crusaders (0-3) led 10-0 after the first quarter, but the Big Green evened the game by halftime when Dominck Pierre scored on a 3-yard run and Lyons booted a 34-yard field goal.
The win for Dartmouth snapped a four-game losing streak to Holy Cross and sends the Big Green with some momentum into this upcoming Saturday’s Ivy League opener at home against Penn.
New Haven 45, St. Anselm 0
WEST HAVEN, Conn. — St. Anselm’s hopes of winning its first game of the year were dashed quickly Saturday as New Haven rolled to a 45-0 New England Collegiate Conference win at Kayo Field.
The high-powered Chargers (4-0, 3-0) rolled up 619 yards of offense, 369 on the ground, and scored in every quarter. An 11-yard touchdown pass from Ronnie Nelson to Jason Thompson less than four minutes into the game opened the floodgates. Nelson threw for 250 yards and four touchdowns.
New Haven has outscored its opponents 168-49.
The Hawks (0-4, 0-3) have given up 162 points in four games and have now lost 14 of 15 games dating to 2010.
They will try to snap a six-game conference losing streak when they travel to face winless Southern Connecticut this upcoming Saturday. The Owls are coming off a 38-35 loss to Merrimack.
UMass Dartmouth 23, Plymouth State 21
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. — Plymouth State couldn’t muster any kind of offense in the second half as it dropped its New England Football Conference opener to UMass Dartmouth, 23-21, Saturday at Cressy Field.
The Panthers (1-3, 0-1) led 14-0 after a 28-yard pass from Jake Tyler to senior wide receiver Nick Cavallo of Salem less than two minutes into the second quarter. They went up 21-13 late in the quarter when Tyler tossed his second touchdown pass of the game, a 16-yard strike to Zac Iovanella.
However, PSU stalled on offense in the second half and squandered what little offense it did manage when an 11-play, 73-yard drive in the third quarter ended with a fumble that was returned 88 yards for a touchdown by UMD’s Joune Frase to put the Corsairs (1-3, 1-0) ahead for good.
The Panthers seek their first conference win when they host Nichols next Saturday.
