Volunteer Guide: There are lots of ways for people to get involved in volunteering in NH
Published below are some of the many organizations that need volunteers in New Hampshire. These and many others are listed on the website of Volunteer NH, at www.volunteernh.org. The online listing contains a contact person and number, along with any age requirements of volunteers.
Animal care
-- Animal Rescue League of NH, 545 Route 101, Bedford. The ARL-NH is in need of volunteers to come in the morning (9 to 11 a.m.) and clean cat cages. A dog kennel cleaner is also needed. Assistance is needed Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. Volunteers work as a team to complete this task.
-- Live and Let Live Farm, 20 Paradise Lane, Chichester. The feeding and care of various animals, mostly horses. The farm helps, rescues and works with just about any type of animal, mostly horses, dogs, cats, birds, etc.
-- Miracles In Motion, 118 Wyman Road, Keene. Sidewalkers needed to walk to the side of the rider on horseback during class. The sidewalker's primary responsibility is for the safety of the student during class. Sidewalker tasks include greeting the student as he/she arrives, remaining with the student and get his/her helmet fitted, assisting the student in balancing on the horse, utilizing special holds, following directions of the instructor during class and assisting the student only when needed to promote independence.
-- Back In The Saddle Equine Therapy Center, 334 College Hill Road, Hopkinton. Volunteers provide safe, effective therapeutic riding experiences for clients 4 to 94. Volunteers offer support (physical as well as emotional) during lessons for riders who might be unbalanced and/or fearful. No horse experience necessary, training provided.
-- Disaster Animal Response Team Members, locations around New Hampshire: Join a team and become prepared to take care of your own animals, your neighbor's animals, and your community's animals. As a trained team member, you'll also be able to participate in state responses to floods, hurricanes, and other natural and man-made disasters involving animals. Currently, volunteers are affiliated with regional teams in Rochester and Hudson. Additional teams are forming in other locations.
-- Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, 23 Science Center Road, Holderness. School group greeters welcome school groups as they arrive on buses. Greeters also welcome visitors and provide information about the science center, animal care volunteers assist with cage cleaning and animal food preparation, office volunteers assist with mailings, and more.
Arts and culture
-- Little Nature Museum, Inc., 216 Tucker Drive, Hopkinton. Volunteers who can help people enjoy and learn from the collections, exhibits, and activities in the museum. Volunteers assure that the museum is open weekends and certain holidays and for special groups from June 23 to Oct. 28.
-- YMCA of Greater Nashua, 34 Stadium Drive, Nashua. Come play with paint, shaving cream, markers and more. Let's Get Messy class is for children ages 18 months to 2 years. Some fun-loving helpers needed on Wednesdays from 9 to 9:30 a.m.
-- League of N.H. Craftsmen, 49 S. Main St., Suite 100, Concord. Train to guide visitors through the League of N.H. Craftsmen's Exhibition Gallery and permanent collection museum. These volunteer guides or docents will be trained to provide educational experiences to gallery and museum visitors on a scheduled and ad-hoc basis. Initial and on-going training will be provided.
-- St. Joseph Hospital Volunteer Services, 172 Kinsley St., Nashua. This is a group of dedicated crafters who create items for craft sales and holiday fairs held within the hospital.
-- McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, 2 Institute Drive, Concord. School greeters greet and orient school visitors upon arrival, provide information and answer questions. The school greeter shifts are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays during the school year. This is an ideal position for retired educators.
Seniors
-- Mascoma Area Senior Center, 1166 U.S. Route 4, Canaan. The Mascoma Area Senior Center is seeking assistance with daily activities and special events for participants of the center; this is also an opportunity to assist with fundraising events.
-- The Birches of Concord, Pleasant Street, Concord. Activities volunteers bring energy, diversity, unique talents and personal interests into a residential community of dedicated memory care staff, families and seniors living with cognitive loss due to Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.
-- Pittsfield Area Senior Center, 74 Main St., Pittsfield. Provide basic introductory computer instruction based on the learner's needs and questions. The center has a small computer area with laptops and Internet access.
-- Horseshoe Pond Place Senior Resource Center, Horseshoe Pond Place, 26 Commercial St., Suite 105, Concord. Teach seniors who are learning to use the Internet in the computer room.
Construction and building
-- Upper Valley Senior Center, 10 Campbell St., Lebanon. Please help us paint the senior center so it provides a warm and welcoming space for our local seniors to enjoy.
-- COVER Home Repair, Inc., Enfield. Join COVER for a day to build a ramp for an elderly woman and help make the entrance to her home accessible. No experience is required.
Office help
-- American Cancer Society New Hampshire, 2 Commerce Drive, Suite 110, Bedford. Volunteers in Bedford office Tuesday evenings to contact, thank, and honor survivors, caregivers, participants, and donors. Donate two hours a year, two hours a month or two hours a week.
Disaster services
-- Community Emergency Response Team Member, several communities. CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; treat the three killers by opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective
Education
-- Families In Transition, 161 S. Beech St., Manchester. Many of Families in Transition's participants have set their own education goals of achieving their GED. Tutors are needed to help with math and reading comprehension skills, along with general test preparation. We are more than willing to work with your schedule and can provide a meeting space for tutoring sessions.
-- N.H. Catholic Charities, 16 Oak St., Manchester. Assist in the needs of teaching subjects required to pass GED Test (language arts, social studies, science and mathematics).
-- The River Center, 44-46 Concord St.., Peterborough. Volunteer will help out with structured activities, reading to children, playing with them and/or holding younger children who may need extra comforting under the direction of the children's enrichment program staff. Volunteers are needed on Wednesday mornings for the Parent-Child Connections program weekly. .
Food preparation
-- The Salvation Army/McKenna House, 100 S. Fruit St., Concord. We provide three meals a day for residents. They are responsible for making their own meals, but they love to have a person/group come in to cook for them.
-- Littleton Area Senior Center. Volunteers needed in the Littleton, Bethlehem, and Lisbon areas to delivery meals to home-delivered-meals recipients.
-- New Hampshire Food Bank, 700 E. Industrial Park Drive, Manchester. Looking for groups and individuals on a recurring basis to help sort donated frozen meat. This project does not involve working in the freezer or cooler.
-- Pittsfield Area Senior Center, 74 Main St., Pittsfield. Enjoy friendship and conversation while helping to serve a community lunch for senior citizens. This volunteer opportunity includes setting up a buffet or putting individual meals on plates that are served to people who have come for lunch. Following lunch the dishes need to be washed, and there is light kitchen clean up.
Youth services
-- Manchester Community Health Center, 145 Hollis St., Manchester. The children's reader works directly with children who are in the waiting room during various times of day. This position requires availability during office hours, Monday through Friday, sometime between 1 to 5 in the afternoon. Minimum one hour per week commitment.
-- Gateways Community Services, 144 Canal St., Nashua. Volunteer to assist Gateways Therapy Services staff in setting up/breaking down the play room for a new social skills group program. Volunteer would also assist staff during the one-hour group session. Volunteer needed 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays Oct. 10 through Nov. 14.
-- CASA of New Hampshire, throughout New Hampshire. CASA is central to fulfilling society's most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child's right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. www.casanh.org
