Driver in crash had law trouble before
PLAISTOW — Authorities in Massachusetts have identified the man who died in a crash Monday after allegedly stealing beer and cigarettes from a convenience store in Plaistow.
The Essex District Attorney’s Office said Dean Stockwell, 49, was killed in the accident in Haverhill that happened about two hours after he was suspected of stealing a 12-pack of beer and two packs of cigarettes from Mini Express in Plaistow.
He fled in a stolen silver Honda Odyssey out of Windham, police said.
Stockwell, who had various addresses in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, is believed to have then travelled to Haverhill and stole from a convenience store there. Haverhill police also said they believe he left a Haverhill restaurant without paying his tab Sunday night.
Police said Stockwell fled from a Haverhill officer after he was spotted Monday following the thefts. Police lost sight of his car, but a short time later an officer working a construction detail in Haverhill heard a crash and found Stockwell had struck the rear of a vehicle driven by William Fantini, 56, of Haverhill.
After hitting the vehicle, police said Stockwell drove and struck a man who was walking his dog and then crashed the minivan into a tree, suffering fatal injuries.
Authorities had not released the name of the 39-year-old pedestrian by Tuesday night. The man was seriously injured and was taken to Lawrence General Hospital but later transferred to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Stockwell had a brush with the law in 2004 when he was stopped in a truck by a Haverhill police officer and then took off. The officer was dragged for a distance before climbing into the back of the truck and shouting at Stockwell to stop. Stockwell eventually stopped after the officer shot him in his right arm.
Monday’s accident remains under investigation by Haverhill police and the Massachusetts State Police C.A.R.S. (Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section).
