Price goes the distance as Rays top Red Sox, 5-2
BOSTON -- David Price struck out a season-high 13 in his second complete game of the year and Jeff Keppinger slammed a three-run homer to power visiting Tampa Bay to its sixth consecutive victory, 5-2, over the Red Sox on Tuesday night.
Price (19-5) joined Jered Weaver as the only 19-game winners in the American League, allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks to pull the Rays within 2 1/2 games of Oakland for the second wild card.
Jose Molina added a two-run single in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 5-1 for Tampa Bay, which was staked to a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Keppinger followed leadoff walks to Evan Longoria and Luke Scott with a towering homer that hit the light tower over the wall in left field.
Boston's Clay Buchholz (11-7), who blanked the Rays for seven innings last Thursday, allowed five runs - four earned - on eight hits in six innings to fall to 0-4 in his last seven starts.
Price allowed a single by Danny Valencia in the second and balked in a run in the third, but gave up just one hit thereafter to improve to 11-1 in his last 17 starts and surpass 200 strikeouts for the second straight year.
