Group that owns Monarchs up for sale

Memo to the richest people of the world: The Anschutz Entertainment Group, a sports and entertainment empire which owns the Los Angeles Kings, Manchester Monarchs and dozens of pro teams and arenas around the globe, is now up for sale.

Exactly how a sale of AEG and its holdings will affect the Monarchs remains to be seen. Robert Siegfried, a spokesperson for AEG said, “Anschutz Company and AEG are conducting this process in a manner that avoids disruption of the day-to-day operations of AEG and its venues, arenas and properties. It’s really just business as usual for AEG and all its operations.”

The Monarchs are a minor asset for AEG and Anschutz Company, which owns and operates the Staples Center and The Home Depot Center, in addition to owning a significant chunk of the Lakers and other pro teams.

What could a potential sale of AEG mean to the Monarchs? Among the scenarios:

Ÿ Little to no change. A new owner would continue to oversee the existing partnership between the Kings and their American Hockey League affiliate.

Ÿ A new owner could be tempted to sell off some of AEG’s holdings, putting the Kings and/or Monarchs up for sale. The Kings and Monarchs, who renew their player development contract annually, would likely be considered a package deal. Monarchs president Darren Abbott and vice president of public affairs Kim Mueller offered no comment when asked about a sale of AEG.

In a statement released this week, the Anschutz Company announced it “will undertake the sale to the qualified party best able to reflect the full value of AEG and fully committed to working with AEG’s management team as it pursues its long-term business objectives.”

Southern New Hampshire University’s Doug Blais, chair of the school’s sport management department, has been closely following the impending sale of AEG and believes there will be little affect on the Monarchs.

“When this all goes through, the fact (the Monarchs) are so small in comparison to all of AEG, I believe there wouldn’t be anything done in the short term. It will take a long time for dust to settle. Plus, everything has indicated AEG will be sold together, not breaking it up. That definitely protects the Monarchs,” Blais said. “For Manchester, if someone ever wanted to move the team, the city of Manchester and Verizon Wireless Arena has done such a great job, and it’s such a hot market for hockey, they could always get another team in here.”
