Pembroke man pawned engagement ring, said it was destroyed
A Pembroke man pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony insurance fraud for pawning his fiancee’s diamond engagement ring, then claiming it was destroyed when it fell into a running kitchen disposal.
In a negotiated agreement with state officials, Randy Ekmarck pleaded guilty to the felony in Merrimack County Superior Court in exchange for a suspended 12-month jail sentence and $2,000 fine. Ekmarck was placed on probation for one year and required to undergo an alcohol and drug addiction evaluation and comply with its recommendations.
Ekmarck took out a personal articles policy with State Farm Insurance to cover the diamond ring Dec. 13, 2011, the state Attorney General’s office said in a statement. He filed the claim in February. When he failed to cooperate with the State Farm investigation, the matter was referred to the state’s Insurance Department Fraud Unit. The ring was located at Atlantic Traders in Chichester.
