LEBANON — Police have zeroed in on a suspect in the Lebanon High School bathroom fire, but have yet to press charges, police chief James Alexander said Wednesday.

Classes resume at the high school today, officials said.

The school was closed Wednesday due to water damage caused by a Tuesday afternoon fire at the school.

Students were released early Tuesday after firefighters responded to a fire in the boys’ bathroom on the second floor.

“We did have a fire in the upstairs boys’ bathroom, and the sprinkler system worked as it should,” said SAU 88 Gail Paludi. “The water damage had to be taken care of before students could return.”

Police at the scene on Tuesday immediately began investigating after they suspected arson.

“Right now we’re just dealing with one suspect,” Alexander said Wednesday. “We believe we’re going to be wrapping up on who actually started the fire soon, but being a juvenile we won’t be able to release any information about that person.”

Juvenile charges may or may not be filed, he said, depending on the findings of the investigation.

Alexander did confirm the suspect is a student at the high school.

“The school will be able to resume tomorrow without any problems or threats tomorrow, we are confident about that as well,” said Alexander.

Evacuation of the building on Tuesday went very smoothly, Paludi said.

“The high school staff and students did a great job. Everybody was out and everyone was accounted for immediately and everyone was safe and that was what we were most concerned about,” Paludi said

Paludi said the school district is waiting on an estimate from its insurance company as to the amount of damage.

“It could have been a lot worse. I really don’t know what we’re looking at right now for cost. The majority of the damage was water damage,” Paludi said. “We were very lucky there was not water in the server room. There was some water in the computer lab, but it only damaged four or five computers.”
