Sacred music workshop to be held in Laconia, Manchester

In honor of the 2012-2013 “Year of Faith,” the Diocese of Manchester Office of Worship will offer a workshop on sacred music next month.

According to a release from Eric J. Bermani, diocesan director of music, “Pope Benedict XVI said the aim of the (Year of Faith) is ‘to arouse in every believer the aspiration to profess the faith in fullness and with renewed conviction, with confidence and hope.’ ... This workshop will emphasize the teaching of the Second Vatican Council on sacred music which should assume ‘pride of place’ in the Roman Rite.”

Musicians, music directors, cantors, choir members, deacons, priests and all interested parties are invited to the workshop, which will discuss how attendees can take part in the revival of sacred music at Mass. It will also feature discussions about the Gregorian chant; the theological foundations of liturgical music; and the distinction between liturgical music and devotional music.

The workshop will be presented by Adam Bartlett, director of sacred music at Sts. Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix, Ariz., and president and editor of Illuminare Publications. He has previously spoken and presented on liturgical music at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and the Atlanta Liturgical Music Symposium, among other places.

Bartlett studied Gregorian chant and the liturgy at St. Meinrad Archabbey and at the Liturgical Institute of St. Mary of the Lake University.

Bartlett will offer the same workshop on Friday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Laconia and on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Joseph Cathedral in Manchester.

The registration fee for the workshop is $15 per attendee. Registration can be done online at catholicnh.org/YearofFaith, or contact Jude Christopher at 669-3100 or at jchristopher@rcbm.org.
