College Sports Roundup: UNH men's soccer team defeats Adelphia in OT
Robert Palumbo lifted the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Adelphi, burying an overtime bid Wednesday at Cowell Stadium in Durham.
The winner lifted the Wildcats to 4-3-2.
Palumbo fired a one-timer after Adelphi’s defender failed to clear the ball. It capped a comeback for the Wildcats, which trailed less than 7 minutes early in the match. Charlie Roche knotted the score before the 12-minute mark.
Travis Worra earned the win in net, playing the second half and 2 minutes, 50 seconds of OT.
SNHU 2, St. Michael’s 0: At Manchester, Dominic Samuel and Jordan Branco scored goals as the Penmen improved to 7-1 (4-1 NE-10).
Merrimack 2, St. Anselm 1 (2 ot): At Goffstown, Sean Smith tied the contest at 1-apiece, scoring on a feed from Matthew McQueeney in the 66th minute. The Hawks dropped to 3-4-1 (3-1-0 NE-10).
Babson 2, Keene State 1: At Babson Park, Mass., the Owls (6-3) surrendered two goals in the first half en route to their first loss in four matches. Brian Swindell scored the lone goal in defeat.
Nichols 1, Daniel Webster 0: At Dudley, Mass., the Eagles (1-6-2) surrendered the lone marker in the match’s 82nd minute. Goalie Brookline’s Sean Hamilton made 12 saves in the loss.
Women’s soccer
SNHU 1, Stonehill 0: At Easton Mass., Freshman Lexxi Carroll scored with 70 seconds remaining in regulation. Carroll collected a loose ball off a deflection in the box and fired her first collegiate goal. Manchester’s Maggie Weldon made two saves for the Penmen (5-3-1, 3-3-1 NE-10).
St. Anselm 1, St. Michael’s 0: At Colchester, Vt., Kaitlin Oldfield snapped a scoreless deadlock in the 80th minute, lifting the Hawks to 2-5-1 (1-4-1 NE-10). Gabriella Primera made six saves.
Plymouth State 3, Lyndon State 1: At Plymouth, Cassie Graham and sparked a three-goal first-half flurry in a span of 8:37. Graham assisted on the second strike, the first of two goals by Carol Messler. The Panthers improved to 2-6.
Gordon 3, NEC 0: At Wenham, Mass., the Pilgrims dropped to 3-6-1 (0-3 NAC).
Rivier 7, Daniel Webster 0: At Nashua, Susan O’Loughlin and Hillary Hee led the Raiders (3-6-1) with two goals apiece, and Barnstead’s Sahara Brown, Rebecca Wickens and Londonderry’s Jillian Pilotte tallied single strikes. Goalie Kendra Shaw turned back the only shot she faced. Merrimack’s Amanda Wilson made 12 saves for the Eagles (1-4).
Field hockey
Keene State 5, Plymouth State 3: At Plymouth, Hayley Dolan scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in a 10-minute span during the second half to pace the Owls (4-4, 2-1 LEC). Goals from Lauren Carroll and Nikki Garvey gave the Panthers (5-3, 3-1 LEC) leads of 1-0 and 3-2, respectively.
UMass Lowell 6, St. Anselm 0: At Lowell, Mass., Megan Sullivan and Shauna Whittemore combined to make 13 saves for the Hawks, which dropped to 3-7 (1-2 NE-10).
