Manchester police warn of phone scam

MANCHESTER — Police are warning of a phone scam in which a person demands money from people after identifying himself as a city police officer and using smart phone technology to mask his caller ID.

Police said the caller claims to be an officer — in some cases, claiming to be Police Chief David Mara — and threatens to arrest people if they do not make payments on an outstanding loan.

Two of the people reported to police that the caller ID from the call displayed 668-8711, which is the business line for the Manchester Police Department.

“Apparently there are smart phone applications available that would allow the suspect to mask his phone number with another number that would subsequently be displayed on caller ID,” according to a police news release.
