Conservation Commission has a busy autumn ahead

DERRY — Summer may be over, but the Conservation Commission still has plenty of activities on the horizon for the fall.

Over the next several weeks, residents who use the public garden at Broadview Farm will have to start their cleanup.

“All the non-organic materials such as fences, labels, stakes and plastic mulch should be out by Oct. 22,” said Conservation Commission member Peg Kinsella.

In past years, there have been some issues with paths between the garden plots becoming overgrown. This year, there was much improved upkeep at the garden, according to Kinsella. Eric Bodenrader, the town parks director, and Public Works Director Mike Fowler have made an extra effort this year to keep the perimeter of the gardens mowed.

“It’s been much better and much more pleasant to work there,” said Kinsella.

Conservation Commission Chairman Margaret Ives said she thought the gardens were fabulous this year.

As the harvest nears an end at Broadview Farms, the commission is also planning its final conservation nature walk of the year on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Doolittle Conservation Area.

“The nature walks have been very well attended this year, even the one at the Lowe property when it rained,” said commission member Dennis Wiley.

Oct. 13 is also the first day of the week-long, town-wide cleanup organized by Go Green Derry. Civic groups and individual citizens are encouraged to clean up public and private ways through Saturday, Oct. 20.

Anyone interested in taking part in the cleanup can pick up trash bags at the town’s transfer station at 43 Transfer Station Lane off Fordway.

“Go Green is also monitoring what roads are being picked up so there is no duplication,” said Wiley. “We’re all set to go to green the town up again.”

More information about the town-wide cleanup is available on the Go Green Derry website at go-green-derry.org.
