Tom Herzig's Trackside: Hudson, Star get to it this weekend

Although the majority of the season’s short track schedule is in the mirror, there are still quite a few choices for your autumn racing fix.

The ISMA Supermodifieds are set for 100 laps at Seekonk Speedway on Saturday, paired with the Boston Louie (Seymour) Classic for Midgets.

Russ Wood of Pelham, recent winner of the ISMA Star Classic, will throw his helmet in the ring at “The Cement Palace.” Canadian Mike Lichty and Ohioan Tim Jedrezjek will resume their points battle for the ISMA crown with Lou Cicconi the longshot contender.

Another Pelham open-wheeler, 22-year-old Chris Larson, will strap into the No. 22 NEMA Midget for the 29-lap Boston Louie Classic. Larson lists Seekonk and Star as his favorite tracks.

Seekonk, a semi-banked one-third mile a little east of Providence, was where ACT Invitational winner Ray Parent learned his trade racing against the likes of Rick Martin, Vinnie Annarummo and Fred Astle Jr.

Parent’s win Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the first of his ACT career, landed him $6,460. Parent led laps 20-34 and 36-50. Joey Polewarczyk Jr. got by Parent for a single circuit, but he had come from 33rd on the grid to do it and the car tightened up on him. Parent started 20th and was stout to the end.

Next up for the American Canadian Tour is the 50th Peoples United Bank Milk Bowl at Thunder Road in Vermont. Tour officials announced this week that a $50,000 bonus will be paid to a driver should he sweep all three Milk Bowl segments. That’s in addition to the previously posted $120,000 purse ($10,000-to-win). It’s not likely to happen, admittedly, but it got defending champion Brian Hoar’s attention.

Hoar, seeking to equal Robbie Crouch’s all-time mark of four Milk Bowl victories, won two of three rounds last year.

Two of the top Milk Bowl contenders, Wayne Helliwell Jr. and Polewarczyk, third and fourth respectively at NHMS last weekend, liked the thought of racing after a $60,000 carrot. “That’s unbelievable!” was Helliwell’s reaction.

“The key is to qualify well,” Polewarczyk said. “If you win the first one and you get back near the front in the second one, that’s where it’ll get interesting. But you could take yourself right out of the race going after it too hard.”

From the “Shoot the Moon Right Between the Ryes” Department:” Lancaster’s Quinny Welch opted to compete in the ACT Invitational while holding a 15-point lead going into Late Model championship night Sunday at White Mountain Motorsports Park. Welch started 11th and finished 17th at Loudon, drove back to White Mountain — obeying the speed limit the whole way, of course — and arrived in time to get into the feature, but missed out on heat and semi-feature points.

Welch and Brockton Davis began the main event tied and one point, ahead of Stacy Cahoon. Travis Fadden of North Haverhill sat another 10 points back. Oren Remick won the event with Fadden second, Cahoon third and Welch seventh. When the points were added up, Cahoon won the title. Other WMMP champions were Gerald Griswold of Bath/Tigers and Chandler Potter of Plainfield, Vt./Strictly Stocks. Thompson Speedway ace Derek Ranstrom of Worcester, Mass., won the PASS 150. Travis Benjamin, the new points leader, finished second.

Championship day goes at Monadnock on Saturday with a 3 p.m. post and a race card that includes the twice rained-out John Hoyt Memorial for the Granite State Pro Stock Series.

On tap Saturday at Star Speedway is the Ed Skofield Memorial 50 for Dwarf cars and the MacLellan Metal Polishing 50 for the Outlaws plus Strictly Stocks and Roadrunners.

Hudson goes green Sunday at 1:03 p.m. There’s quite the title fight going on in the rookie class at Hudson. Defending champion John Morin Jr. of Nashua has a one-point lead over Jerry LePage of Nashua.

Bear Ridge Speedway, across the Connecticut River in Bradford, Vt., has set an early 5:30 post to get in its Perry Oil Service/99Rock championship night finale, most of which was rained out last weekend. Tyler Rich of Lyme did manage his third career win in the Sprint Cars of New England before the rain. Chris Donnelly of Piermont finished third, good enough to clinch the 2012 title.

New England Dirt Track Championship feature events for the Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds, A Notch Above Automotive Limited Late Models, and Fast Four divisions will be run before the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank Night season finale program begins. A division-record 26 Sportsman Modifieds are scheduled to start the 50-lap main event.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway winner Doug Coby and the rest of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is in action Sunday at Stafford Speedway.

Trackside appears Thursdays in the New Hampshire Union Leader.
