CONCORD - A man who has served 27 years in prison for stabbing his wife to death in Manchester has been paroled.

Steven Volkmann will be eligible for parole on or after his minimum release date of Nov. 22 and must still pull together a suitable plan for his living and work, said Andrea Goldberg, executive assistant to the NH Adult Parole Board.

Volkman appeared before Parole Board Chairman Jeffrey Brown, Mark Furlone and M. Katherine McCarroll on Thursday.

Goldberg said Volkmann will be supervised by the Concord District parole office.

Volkmann has been in prison for the 1985 murder of his young wife, Teri, at her Manchester apartment.

In 2010, Volkmann attempted to get a sentence reduction but Superior Court Judge James O'Neill concluded Volkmann 's bid to shave 33 months off his prison sentence could not be granted despite his best efforts to be a model inmate.

Volkmann, 55, stabbed his wife more than 20 times with a large hunting knife inside her Manchester apartment on Nov. 30, 1985, before throwing her down a flight of stairs.

"The brutality exhibited by (Volkmann) cannot be ignored nor is same diminished with the passage of time," O'Neill wrote.

Volkmann pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was given a sentence of 27-years-to-life. That plea deal allowed him to avoid a charge of first-degree murder at trial, which carries life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Volkmann has worked on two master's degrees while incarcerated.
