Hopkinton grad fires UNH field hockey to win
Hannah Richard, a Hopkinton High graduate, scored two goals and had the game winner with 4:14 remaining in the second overtime session as the 15th-ranked University of New Hampshire field hockey team defeated Fairfield University, 3-2, at Fairfield, Conn., on Friday.
Richard, one of the nation’s top scorers, matched her career high of two goals and extended her goal-scoring streak to five games and team-leading total to 10. UNH goalie Carlie Tarbell matched her personal best of nine saves, including two in the opening 15-minute overtime session. The Wildcats improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in America East play.
The 96th minute of play marked the Wildcats’ longest game since Oct. 10, 2007, in which Dartmouth College prevailed 3-2 by penalty strokes after 100 minutes. UNH is now 2-1 in OT this season, and all three games have been decided in the second extra session.
Women’s Volleyball
UNH 3, UMBC 2: At Baltimore, junior Morgan Thatcher netted 18 kills and three other Wildcats posted double-digit kills as the University of New Hampshire downed the Retrievers on Friday night at the RAC Arena. UNH (10-8, 2-0) won its fifth-straight match and has now played in eight five-set matches this season, winning the last three during the winning streak. UMBC falls to 7-12 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Thatcher, the reigning America East Player of the Week, posted a .405 hitting percentage to pair with four blocks. Freshmen Abby Brinkman and Tori Forrest posted 13 kills apiece, while fellow rookie Brenna Buckwalter logged 11 kills. Senior Jansan Falcusan racked up 52 assists, while junior Destiny Tolliver posted six blocks.
Penn 3, Dartmouth 0: At Hanover, the Big Green were swept in the their second home match of the season by scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-18. Pennsylvania (6-7 overall, 1-1 Ivy League) have now beaten Dartmouth (2-10 overall, 1-1 Ivy League) in 12 consecutive matches. Sophomore Alex Schoenberger led the Big Green with 11 kills and 8 digs for the match.
Bridgeport 3, Franklin Pierce 1: At Bridgeport, Conn., Freshman outside hitter Madison Duffy led FPU with 10 kills on Friday night.
