Nashua South gridders shine in the rain over rival North

NASHUA — Rain-soaked Stellos Stadium wasn't a problem for the Purple Panthers, specifically their quarterback and featured running back.

The 1-2 punch of signal-caller Trevor Knight and Dymier Hyde fueled a 27-point second quarter for No. 10 Nashua South, which rolled Friday night to a 30-17 Division I win over Gate City rival Nashua North.

“We did tonight what we do,” said South head coach Scott Knight, referring to his offense's ability to post points in a hurry, a trait that disappeared the previous two weeks.

Trevor Knight (two rushing touchdowns) and Hyde (TD) each ran for 115 yards. The duo combined for all 47 carries out of the backfield. South's QB also threw for 109 yards, including a 70-yard scoring strike to Steven Choate.

“I think we had a great week of practice. We really focused on what we needed to do to win this game,” Trevor Knight said. “We just executed pretty well.”

South's second-quarter barrage answered North's first-quarter score. Gus Barroso (78 rushing yards) broke a 55-yard run inside left tackle and dove for the right pylon. He was ruled down by contact at the 1-yard line, but capped the drive on the next snap.

The points were North's first in the rivalry since 2010. South won last year's regular-season and Thanksgiving Day games by a combined score of 89-0.

Four snaps into the second quarter, Hyde pulled the South (3-2 overall, 2-1 Division I) within 7-6. The senior scored from 7 yards out, though the extra point missed.

South's defensive intensity didn't lack. Lineman Braden Hollowell (forced fumble) unloaded several big hits, and made a third-down stick that forced a three-and-out.

It was the first of three consecutive four-snap possessions for North's offense. South made the Titans (2-3, 1-3) pay, scoring TDs on each ensuing possession.

“When you can't move the football, like we didn't have the ability to do in the first half, that sets up their offense to have some success,” North head coach Jason Robie said.

After North's Mike Lynch landed a crushing hit on Trevor Knight, the South QB stood up and fired a strike on the next play. Choate slipped behind North's secondary for a 70-yard score and 12-7 lead.

South's next drive lasted four plays. Trevor Knight capped it with a 1-yard keeper. Ryan Guidaboni's extra point extended the lead to 19-7.

The sixth play of South's final first-half drive produced Trevor Knight's second 1-yard plunge. A bad PAT snap led to Pat Goff's two-point run.

Kyle Regan (30-yard field goal) and Guidaboni (27-yard FG) traded long three-point kicks in the third quarter. The frame ended with Brandon Martin firing a 22-yard TD to Regan as time expired.

“We could've looked at what's happened the last couple of weeks and gone the other way,” said Scott Knight, also referencing his team's 39-12 loss to Lowell, Mass., in Week 3. “Our guys said, 'Let's start playing.'”
