H.S. Sports: Mack Plaque goes to Pinkerton again
LONDONDERRY — Pinkerton of Derry clinched retention of the Mack Plaque for the 11th straight autumn with the girls’ soccer team’s 1-0 win over rival Londonderry before 400 spectators on Saturday afternoon.
The game’s outcome wasn’t decided until Astros keeper Emily Harris made a diving save as time expired. Kayla Komaridis struck the game’s lone goal in the 12th minute.
Londonderry spent the rest of the game pressuring for the tying score. Harris stopped a penalty kick and made 11 other saves while defensive mates Jacqui Wyka and Samantha Breslin made goal-saving plays off the feet of Lydia Simmons and Aliza Simpson. Londonerry dropped to 9-2 with Pinkerton improving to 7-2-1.
The win ensured the Astros’ win in the 30th annual event involving head-to-head competition in each the nine fall varsity sports. Londonderry last won bragging rights in 2001.
Pinkerton (21-5) won the golf match by three strokes Friday afternoon. Andrew Wentworth led the winners, shooting a 41 while Londonderry’s (17-8) Taylor Simpson was the match medalist with 39.
On Saturday, the Astros (9-1) prevailed in girls’ volleyball with Tyla Mashon making 13 kills and blocking three shots. Julia Wasserman had 17 digs and 11 assists for the Lancers (5-6).
Pinkerton’s (8-1-1) field hockey shut out Londonderry 2-0, scoring twice late in the second half to snap the Lancers’ (7-3) six-game win streak.
The Astros boys’ harriers also claimed a victory. Londonderry won the girls’ race with Sydney Laguex and Alissa Rogers finishing first and second respectively.
Unlike the girls’ match, all drama and suspense ended early in the boys’ soccer game. Undefeated Londonderry (9-0) scored before the game was three minutes old, beating Pinkerton (8-3), 5-1. Rob Hart led the winners by tallying four breakaway goals.
Chris Horan netted the Astros’ lone score.
