College Sports Roundup: St. Anselm women deadlock
St. Anselm’s Alexa Lucci scored in the 81st minute to force overtime and Hawks keeper Gabriella Primera blanked Southern Connecticut during the extra session as the teams played to a 1-1 women’s soccer draw in New Haven, Conn., Saturday.
Kaitlin Oldfield nearly won the game for the Hawks in the 94th minute, but her shot ricocheted wide of the goal. Five minutes later, Jenna Szostak generated another St. Anselm chance which again sailed wide. Primera finished with five saves.
Southern New Hampshire 1, Assumption 0: At Worcester, Mass., Lexxi Carroll scored her second-straight game-winning goal, improving the Penmen to 6-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the NE-10. Samantha Whittier garnered the shutout in the Penmen net, making three saves.
Franklin Pierce 2, Adelphi 1: Fernanda Marques and Hannah Weagle scored first half goals and the Ravens upped their record to 5-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the NE-10. FPU keeper Casey Edward made four saves in the triumph.
Keene State 5, Plymouth State 0: At Keene, the Owls extended their win streak to five games as they improved to 2-1 in the LEC. Brittany Croteau of Swanzey, Brittany Boscarino, Jessica Berthiaume, Amber Pelletier and Hayley Kenyon of Exeter provided the offense. Plymouth is 0-3 in the league.
Wheelock 2, Daniel Webster 1: At Nashua, Jessica Hersom’s penalty kick in the 59th minute stood up as the game-winner. Earlier, Ema Donlagic of Belmont had tied the match at 1-1 for DWC. Merrimack’s Amanda Wilson made seven saves for the Eagles.
Suffolk 1, Rivier 0: At Nashua, Raiders keeper Cassandra Brown of Somersworth stopped eight of the nine shots she faced, surrendering the match’s lone strike to Gabrielle Balestrier.
Field hockey
Dartmouth 2, Pennsylvania 0: At Hanover, Ali Savage and Maya Herm scored goals and goalie Ellen Meyer earned her first career shutout with four saves.
St. Anselm 4, Assumption 3: At Goffstown, two second half goals in 1:47 by Taylor Coons completed the Hawks rally from a 3-1 deficit. Elizabeth Sears and Colleen Sears scored St. Anselm’s initial two goals. Sarah Frahm of Salem and Austen Theroux of Goffstown netted strikes for the Greyhounds.
Keene State 5, Western Connecticut State 1: At Danbury, Conn., the Owls erupted for four first half goals and improved to 4-1 in the LEC. Kalin Billert of Center Conway and Haylie Dolan each scored twice and Aimee Donaruma tallied once.
Colby-Sawyer 2, Rivier 1: At Nashua, the Raiders Ashley Ruocco of East Kingston and the Chargers Emma Frampton traded goals before Nicole Danehy scored the second-half game-winner. Makenzie Flagg made 20 saves for Rivier as the Raiders were outshot, 31-6.
Adelphi 3, Franklin Pierce 0: At Rindge, the Ravens remained winless in the NE-10, falling to 0-4, despite 14 saves from Sarah Cote.
Women's volleyball
Southern New Hampshire 3, Merrimack 1: At Manchester, the Penmen won their eighth straight match and first of the NE-10 campaign. Catherine Cotton handed out 48 assists.
Princeton 3, Dartmouth 0: At Hanover, the Big Green dropped three straight 25-18 sets. Alex Schoenberger paced the Big Green with 13 kills and three blocks.
New Haven 3, Franklin Pierce 1: At West Haven, Conn., Lauren Miller had 25 digs in the Ravens setback.
Rivier: At Salisbury, Md., the Raiders were swept by both No. 20 Salisbury and Virginia Wesleyan. Kenna Finlayson of Derry finished the matches with 25 kills.
Women's cross country
Keene State Invitational: At Keene, the Owls placed six runners in the top 10 to handily capture the team crown with a low 24 point total. Maggie Fitter posted a 19:01 on the 5K course to win her first collegiate race. Samantha Goldsmith of Derry was third overall in 19:27, while Kaitlin Wheeler of Exeter and Marie Whitney of Jaffrey finished eighth and ninth respectively.
Pop Crowell Invitational: At Wenham, Mass., Southern New Hampshire finished eighth in a field of 27 teams, led by top 10 finishes from Madeline Hayes (sixth, 18:56) and Stacey Wojcik (10th, 19:07). Alyssa Lambert of Manchester ran 47th (20:10.7) for 15th place Franklin Pierce.
Men's soccer
Franklin Pierce 1, St. Anselm 0: Greg Giguere, who logged eight shots and five on goal, scored the match’s only goal during the 82nd minute and Franklin Pierce edged St. Anselm, 1-0, in Northeast-10 men’s soccer action in Rindge Saturday.
FPU improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference. It was the Ravens third consecutive victory. St. Anselm, meanwhile, slipped to 3-5-1 and 3-2.
Gareth Dudney sparked the scoring play with a pass to the net which Giguere was able to put a foot on and sent to the upper right corner of the goal. It was Giguere’s team-leading sixth strike of the season.
St. Anselm keeper Eric Moriarty turned in a strong performance, blocking seven shots. At the other end of the pitch, Jake Wright stopped two shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
Pierce outshot the Hawks in the match, 20-6.
Southern New Hampshire 4, Post University 1: At Manchester, No. 15 SNHU scored twice in each half to gain the non-conference victory. Chris Tsonis and Chris Pereira netted the Penmen’s first half goals, while Yannick Kabala of Manchester and Austin Britt tallied the second half strikes. Mark Painchaud of Concord was the winning keeper, making three saves. Southern New Hampshire has won four straight and is 8-1.
Plymouth State 1, Keene State 0: At Plymouth, Ted Karistrand scored the only goal of the game during the 61st minute, helping the Panthers (1-2 in the Little East) snap a five-game losing skid. The goal resulted from a rebound of a Joss Knol free kick.
Southern Vt. 2, Daniel Webster 0: At Nashua, Pierre Massena notched a pair of first half goals to guarantee the win. Sean Hamilton of Brookline made six saves for DWC.
Men's cross country
Keene State Invitational: At Keene, the Owls swept the initital eight spots for a perfect score of 15. Thomas Paquette headed the field on the five-mile course with a time of 26:42. Ryan Widzgowski, Chris Plankey of Bristol, Andrew Sears of Derry and Hayden Patterson of Dover rounded out the Keene scorers.
Pop Crowell Invitational: At Wenham, Mass., Colton Ham of Webster, the 2011 NHIAA Division II cross country champion, finished second and was the highest collegiate finisher, helping FDranklin Pierece to a third place finish. He completed the 8K course in 26:00.2. Joe Trujilo of Derry and Isaac Fithian of Kingston ran among the race’s top 25 individuals. Garrett Hammond was the top finisher for Southern New Hampshire, running 84th with a time of 29:28. The Penmen ended 20th.
