College Football Roundup: Plymouth State tops Nichols in overtime
Dustin Matthews’ one yard plunge gave host Plymouth State University a 20-14 overtime win over Nichols during New England Football Conference Boyd Division action Saturday afternoon. PSU is 2-3 and Nichols is 0-5.
The Panthers came up with a defensive stop when Nichols took the first possession of overtime. Senior Josh Morgan intercepted a Jacob Shoup pass attempt at the Panther 20 yard line.
Plymouth St. took over and moved into scoring position thanks to an 11 yard completion from quarterback Jake Tyler to Matthews and an 11 yard run by Andrew Foglia.
Nichols forced the overtime when Shoup connected with Dylan Rimski on a 41-yard touchdown pass with 2:23 left in fourth quarter.
Trestenn Clark gave PSU a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on a three yard run and Tyler made it 14-7 when he rumbled in from two yards out later in the quarter. The second Plymouth touchdown was set up by Chris Smith of Merrimack when he blocked a Bison punt on the 33 yard line. The ball was downed on the Nichols four yard line.
Nichols outgained Plymouth St. in total yards, 355-164.
Shoup finished the afternoon by connecting on 18 of 38 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Rimski had eight catches for 155 yards and a touchdown.
The Panthers were led on offense by Clark, who finished with 52 yards on eight carries. PSU punter Nick Cavallo of Salem had 10 punts with a 39.1 average and had two inside the 20.
Penn 28, Dartmouth 21: At Hanover, Penn scored on all four of their first half possessions to build a 20-0 lead at halftime.
Running back Jeff Jack scored on a one yard run as did Greg Schuster. Connor Loftus hit field goals of 28 and 25 yards and kicked a pair of PATS for the 20 point total. Penn is 1-2 while Dartmouth is 2-1.
Penn senior quarterback Billy Ragone, who eclipsed the 3,000 career passing yards mark, was 14-for-18 for 165 yards and had 60 rushing yards.
Dartmouth sophomore quarterback led a second half comeback for the Big Green. He finished 20-for-29 with 279 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Dominick Pierre became the 25th Dartmouth player to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a career. He had 95 yards on the day including a 33 yard touchdown run.
Michael Reilly caught one of the touchdown passes from Park while the other went to Ryan McManus. Reilly finished with seven catches for 115 yards.
Southern Conn. St. 45, St. Anselm 34: At New Haven, Conn., Junior running back Vaughn Magee ran away with the game and a record in the fourth quarter for SCSU.
Magee broke a seven year old Division II record for rushing yards in a quarter with 187 yards and three touchdowns in the final quarter against St. Anselm Saturday. The effort saw his team’s 31-23 deficit after three quarters turn into the 11-point win.
Magee, who finished with 297 yards on 30 attempts scored on fourth quarter runs of 25, 44 and 26 yards. Jacob Jablonski complemented Magee’s ground attack with a 21-for-36 effort throught the air good for 292 yards and two touchdowns. He was also picked off twice.
Andrew Murphy had a huge day taking the snaps for the Hawks. He connected on 29-of-43 attempts and had 405 yards with four touchdowns with one interception. Justin Bernard was Murphy’s favorite target. Bernard had 13 catches for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
Running back Ahkeen Williams rushed the ball eight times for 82 yards and caught nine passes from Murphy for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
The Hawks took a 34-23 lead early in the fourth quarter on Shea Cerio’s second field goal of the game (25 and 29 yards).
Magee scored three minutes later and then again midway through the fourth. His final score came with 34 ticks left on the clock as SCSU effectively finished the game with a 12 play, 99-yard drive that ate up nearly six minutes of the clock.
The win was the first of the year for the Owls (1-4) while St. Anselm remains winless at 0-5.
