Town still waiting for a light on Kilrea Road
DERRY — A vote on the acceptance of a subdivision road off Windham Depot Road turned into a discussion about the oft-delayed construction of a traffic light at the intersection of Route 28 and Kilrea Road.
The Town Council unanimously approved the acceptance of Middleridge Road, a new 900-foot subdivision road as a town roadway.
As the council went to vote on the acceptance, Councilor Brian Chirichiello asked about the progress of potential state funding for the construction of the traffic light at the nearby intersection of Kilrea Road and Route 28.
“The latest information is that the project is planned to bid in 2013,” said Public Works Director Mike Fowler. However, Fowler said the project was also scheduled to bid this year and has been delayed several times in the past.
“We will continue to monitor what's coming from the state,” said Fowler. “I would not be surprised if this is pushed out for another year.”
Chirichiello, who also served on the Planning Board for a number of years, said he is frustrated that the project has been delayed so many years.
“There have been a lot of accidents at that intersection,” he said.
Town Administrator John Anderson noted that the state has delayed a number of road projects over the past year because of a lack of registration money coming into the state's coffers.
Council Chairman Brad Benson suggested the council draft a letter to the state's Department of Transportation with copies to Derry's state legislators expressing the town's concern over the project delay.
With increased development in the area, Councilor Neil Wetherbee said traffic at the intersection will only increase.
During Tuesday night's meeting, the council also accepted the acquisition of a parking lot on Birch Street from the state associated with the 2010 state upgrade of the Route 102 and 28 intersection.
The quarter-acre lot provides 19 parking spaces to mitigate six parallel parking spaces lost during the widening work.
“Maybe we can trade the parking lot for the traffic light,” joked Wetherbee.
