Bedford boys take Division I golf title
Bedford, behind Nick Dempster, A.J. Spagnuolo, and Justin Clutter, churned out a five-stroke victory over two-time defending champion Keene to win the NHIAA Division I Golf Championship at the Cochecho CC in Dover Thursday.
Bedford, which captured the NHIAA 2010 team title in Division II, finished with a winning 386 score ahead of Keene (391) and Bishop Guertin (399). Hanover defended its Division II title at Canterbury CC. Hanover beat Windham , 388-403.
In Division III at Newport CC , Bow (321) dethroned defending state champion Mascenic of Canaan (326) while Pelham finished third at 332.
Derryfield of Manchester captured the Division IV team championship at Newport CC. The Cougars scored 329, followed by Newport (343) and Hopkinton (360).
On Saturday at Cochecho CC, the low 24 scorers and ties from Thursday in Division I will advance to a second round of 18 holes to determine the individual champion. The same is true of Division II at Canterbury CC.
The low 12 scorers and ties will also advance from Divisions III and IV to determine league individual champions at Newport CC on Saturday.
Chelso Barrett fired a two-under 34-34-68 to take a five-shot lead into Saturday's final round for the Division I individual title at Cochecho CC. Dempster (40-33-73), Matt Paradis of Central (37-36-73) and Sam Shafer of Dover (35-38-73) are within striking distance of Barrett, who is the two-time Division I champion.
Hanover's Benny Hayes and Nate Choukas will be joined by Tom Hickson from St. Thomas of Dover and Connor Greenleaf of Windham in Saturday's lead group in Division II second-round individual play at Canterbury Country Club. Hanover won the team title for the second straight year at Canterbury.
In Division IV, Patrick McGinley (71) of Derryfield holds a one-shot lead against defending champion Hayden Maroun of Moultonborough at the par 35-36-71 Newport CC.
