Bra Bank will benefit NH Breast Cancer Coalition
MANCHESTER — Starting today, the Mall of New Hampshire will feature a sculpture of a bust much larger than any mannequin found in the surrounding stores, the centerpiece of a monthlong fundraiser for the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition.
Gov. John Lynch and Mayor Ted Gatsas will be on hand for the 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony in the mall's center court.
In addition to the “Bust Bra Bank,” in which visitors can put donations, there will be a red carpet area where anyone can purchase a bra for $1.
A message to honor breast cancer survivors or those who have lost their battle with the disease can be written on the bra and then placed onto a fabricated wall that will be on display throughout October.
The Bra Bank was custom built by Prestige Auto Body, which also created the 10-foot-tall pink ribbon sculpture for the 2010 and 2011 “Bras Across The River” event held on the Bridge Street Bridge.
The event is being sponsored by WZID 95.7 FM and Velcro Industries.
“This year, we decided to create a whole new event that will raise awareness for the entire month of October,” Lucie Chakmakas of WZID said in a statement. “Again, this year, we are overwhelmed with the support of area businesses to support this effort to help people that really need it, right here in New Hampshire.”
All of the proceeds will go to the NH Breast Cancer Coalition.
The display will be up through Oct. 27.
Other supporting sponsors of the event are People's United Bank, St. Joseph Hospital Breast Care Center and Ira Toyota and Ira Lexus. Event partners include the Copper Door Restaurant, which will provide a $25 gift certificate for every $100 donation.
Online donations will be accepted on the event website, www.BraBank.org.
Central Paper Products will kick off the donations with their $1,000 Gold Bra Challenge. Participating vendors for the event include: Walgreens, Manchester Community Health, Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Amanda Thomas Boutique, Hesser College and many more.
