College Sports Roundup: St. Anselm tops So. Conn. in men's soccer
Three different Hawks scored and St. Anselm rolled to a 3-1 Northeast-10 men’s soccer victory over Southern Connecticut State in Goffstown Saturday.
The victory moved the Hawks to 4-3-0 in the league and 4-6-1 overall.
Zach Wheeler netted the initial St. Anselm goal at 16:44, tying the match at 1-1. Brian Ayers struck less than a minute later for a 2-1 adavantage, and Bruno Dasilva closed the Hawks and the game’s scoring with his tally at 33:18.
Mario Dimiceli’s early-match goal at 4:34 gave Southern Connecticut a short-lived 1-0 lead.
Southern New Hampshire 2, Assumption 0: At Manchester, Chris Tsonis scored his NE-10-leading ninth goal of the season and Yannick Kabala of Manchester knocked in a rebound as the No. 13 Penmen (10-1 and 6-1) won their sixth straight. Keeper Dom DiMaggio blocked four shots in the SNHU goal.
Keene State 1, Eastern Connecticut State 1 (2 OT): At Keene, the Owls Scott Douglas and the Warriors Cory Tobler traded goals during a five-minute span of the first half before the keepers, KSC’s Malcolm Cheney (seven saves) and ECSU’s Eric Munsells (two stops) took over.
Plymouth State 1, Southern Maine 0: At Plymouth, Adam Groves successful header with 4:29 remaining in regulation pushed the Panthers to 2-2-0 in the Little East. Manchester’s Petro Masumbuko assisted on the play.
Daniel Webster 4, Becker 1: At Leicester, Mass., Erick Bourdeau of Alton Bay netted a pair of goals as the Eagles gained their first NECC win in three matches.
Golf
NECC Championship: At Litchfield, Babson and Springfield each scored 308 to tie for the lead while Daniel Webster is sixth (356) after first round play at Passaconaway CC. Ryan Lewis led DWC with a 16th place 84.
Men's ross country
James Earley Invitational: At Westfield, Mass., Southern New Hampshire placed 33rd in the 40-team race. Garrett Hammond, Nathaniel Stiles of Berlin and Doug Coulters of Weare were the top Penmen racers.
Runnin’ Monks Invitational: At Standish, Maine, Joe DiSalvo of Derry registered his first individual victory with a 29:24 8K effort for St. Joseph’s College.
Women's Soccer
SNHU 3, Le Moyne 1: Ashley Jaskula scored two goals and assisted on another as Southern New Hampshire downed Le Moyne, 3-1, in a Northeast-10 women’s soccer match at Larkin Field in Manchester Saturday.
Jaskula netted her first goal of the match 12 minutes into the fray when she collected a long through ball from Manchester’s Kaleigh Roberge and finished the play from 12 yards. Her second goal and fourth of the week developed from a pass from Bethi Ledoux.
St. Anselm 1, St. Rose 1 (2 OT): At Goffstown, the Hawks Siobhan Flaherty was credited with an own goal 54 minutes into the match, and St. Rose’s Sydney Bond responded with a successful direct kick for the only goals of the match.
Franklin Pierce 3, New Haven 2: At Rindge, Aya Noguchi slammed home a penalty kick with just six seconds remaining in regulation to snap a 2-2 deadlock and send the Ravens to 5-4-1 in the Northeast-10. FPU led early, 2-0, on a pair of Talita Pereira goals.
Dartmouth 3, Yale 1: At Hanover, Emma Brush, Corey Delaney and Lucielle Kozlov booted home goals for the Big Green (2-1 Ivy).
Eastern Connecticut State 2, Keene State 1 (2 OT): At Willimantic, Conn., Chelsea Downer’s goal at 104:20 capped ECSU’s rally from an early one-goal deficit. Kristen Huckins scored the Keene goal.
Southern Maine 1, Plymouth State 0: At Gorham, Maine, Amy Jose’s goal in the 76th minute proved decisive. PSU keeper Chelsea Duval of Dover made five stops.
Colby-Sawyer 3, Maine Maritime 0: At New London, Chargers keeper Shay Spencer set a CSC record as she garnered her 25th career victory. Nineteen of her wins have been shutouts. Laurel Bauer of Bradford scored twice.
Field hockey
Plymouth State 3, Fitchburg State 2: At Fitchburg, Mass., PSU out-shot the hosts 29-9 but had to come from behind twice to secure the win. Olivia Colborn of Lancaster (Lauren Carroll, Rollinsford, assist), Tayla Corrado and Jackie Morin scored the Panthers goals. Winning keeper Katlyn Hall of Greenfield made four stops, while Lucy Holewa of Londonderry recorded 16 for the Falcons.
