NH College Football Roundup: Big second half sparks Dartmouth win
Dartmouth, trailing 14-13 at the break, scored 21 unanswered second half points to pick up a road win over Yale during Ivy League action Saturday in New Haven, Conn.
The win for Dartmouth (3-1) over Yale (1-3) is the first in the last 10 match-ups between the schools.
Dartmouth quarterback Alex Park connected through the air for 204 yards and the Big Green offense churned up another 201 yards of rushing on the ground.
Dominick Pierre led Dartmouth with 19 carries and 91 yards but he left the game in the third quarter with an injury. Freshman Brian Grove entered and moved 38 yards on 10 carries with a pair of touchdowns.
Park, a sophomore, was 15-of-27 on the afternoon with a touchdown and no interceptions. Senior Greg Patton, in his first action since tearing his Achilles in the spring, jumped in and ran the Wildcat offense for Dartmouth and rushed for 52 yards on seven carries.
Dartmouth took the lead for good on Park’s touchdown pass to Justin Foley from six yards out and after Riley Lyons added the PAT it was 20-14.
Grove scored from nine yards out with just over six minutes remaining in the game. The Big Green defense set up the score with a fourth down stop on a fake punt on the Yale 38.
Dartmouth iced the game after another fourth down stop at midfield and a one yard touchdown by Grove. The short drive was highlighted by a Patton 31 yard run.
Lyons kicked a 24 yard field goal midway through the opening quarter to put Dartmouth up 3-0.
Grant Wallace pulled in a 51 yard toss from quarterback Eric Williams for a 7-3 Yale advantage. Pierre capped a 12 play, 60 yard drive with a one yard touchdown run.
Yale faked a field goal and holder Derek Russell hit Dylan Drake all alone in the endzone for a score a 14-10 Bulldog lead. Lyons hit a 36 yarder before the half to make it 14-13 heading into halftime.
MIT 28, Plymouth St. 7: At Cambridge, Mass., MIT used a solid running attack to push past visiting PSU Saturday afternoon. The hosts averaged nearly six yards per carry.
Brad Goldsberry carried the ball 19 times for 121 yards and had one of the four touchdowns. He capped MIT’s first quarter drive which moved 86 yards in 11 plays and Goldsberry slashed his way into the endzone from nine yards at 7:53.
As a team, MIT had 44 carries for 253 yards. Peter Williams complemented the ground game with a modest air attack by completing 13 of his 20 attempst for 162 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
Justin Wallace had 17 carries for 96 yards but he had the other three touchdowns for MIT. He scored on runs of eight, three and 19 yards.
It was Wallace’s second quarter touchdown with 50 seconds remaining that gave MIT a 14-0 advantage at the break.
Andrew Foglia finished a 10 play, 47 yard drive for PSU when he found paydirt from four yards out. Nick Cavallo’s extra point made it 14-7 with 6:50 remaining in the third.
MIT answered quickly though moving 75 yards in 2:41 and regaining a two touchdown lead on Wallace’s three yard run. Wallace scored in the fourth with just over two minutes remining to put the game away.
Plymouth St. was hurt by four turnovers on the day - three interceptions and one fumble. The Panthers couldn’t take advantage of an MIT fumble late in the third as they fumbled the ball back to MIT six plays later.
Foglia led the PSU offense with 15 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown. Josh Morgan anchored the defensive side with 12 tackles. Mark Hennessy and Louis Montegari each added nine.
Plymouth State is 2-4 while MIT is now 3-2.
