Hooksett man dies in crash after swerving to avoid dead bear on I-89
HOPKINTON - A Hooksett man died Tuesday morning in a crash after he swerved to avoid a dead black bear on Interstate 89.
Jesse Amador, 24, was unconscious in his 2002 Subaru Impreza when New Hampshire state troopers arrived about 5:30 a.m. at the crash scene located near Exit 5 on I-89 North.
Troopers broke the car's front windshield to reach Amador, who was not wearing his seat belt, and performed CPR on him until emergency crews from the Hopkinton Fire Department arrived. He was transported to Concord Hospital where he died from his injuries.
The bear was killed when it was hit by a pickup truck, according to a state police news release. Its carcass was in the passing lane when Amador, driving north in that lane, came up on it and swerved into the right lane to avoid hitting it.
He lost control of his car when he swerved back to the left lane. The Subaru went down the median embankment, hit several trees and then rolled onto its passenger side, according to state police.
The accident remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call Trooper Irwin Malilay of Troop D at 603-271-1162 or 603-223-8496.
