NH college sports roundup: UNH jumps to Nos. 12/13 in football polls
A workmanlike road win against winless Georgia State moved the Wildcats up a few spots in the latest weekly football polls.
The University of New Hampshire is ranked 12th by The Sports Network FCS Top 25 and No. 13 by the FCS Coaches Weekly Poll.
Last week the Wildcats were No. 14 in the Sports Network poll and No. 17 in the coaches poll.
UNH running back Nico Steriti and tight end Harold Spears were each honored Monday for their individual performances in the Wildcats’ 44-21 victory against Georgia State Saturday at the Georgia Dome.
Steriti, a sophomore who ran for 126 yards and scored three touchdowns, was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s offensive player of the week.
Spears set a career high with six catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. He was named the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) national tight end performer of the week.
Steriti, the CAA’s leading rusher at 91.7 yards a game, exceeded the 100-yard rushing mark for the third time in four weeks. He scored on carries of 7 yards and 34 yards. He also added his first career touchdown catch, an eight-yard reception in the first quarter.
Spears also registered his first career touchdown when he hauled in a 26-yard reception on the game’s first drive.
UNH (4-2, 2-1 CAA) prepares to take on Richmond (4-2, 2-1) at Cowell Stadium on Saturday at noon.
The game will be live on CSN-NE.
