Manchester man arrested in taxi driver robbery
MANCHESTER — A local man, accused of stiffing a Portland, Maine, taxi driver on a $150 fare and then trying to rob her, was easily tracked down after he left paperwork with his name on it in a bag in the trunk of the cab, police said.
Vadim Bondaraenko, 27, of 260 Cedar St., was arrested without incident Saturday night at his home and charged with two counts of robbery.
According to a news release, Bondaraenko hired a cab at the Greyhound bus station in Portland to take him back home to Manchester. He agreed to pay $150 for the ride.
The ABC Taxi driver told police when she arrived at 618 Massabesic St. Bondaraenko told her not only did he not have the money for the fare, but he would shoot her if she didn't turn over the cash.
Initially, the taxi driver was skeptical that he had a gun, but she told investigators Bondaraenko pulled a black handgun from his jacket pocket. She immediately jumped out of the cab and ran. Bondaraenko ran from the cab as well. He never got any money from the cab driver, who called police.
Police searched the cab and found a bag in the trunk which had paperwork with Bondaraenko's name on it, according to Lt. Maureen Tessier. Detectives called Portland police, confirmed Bondaraenko's identity and went to the Cedar Street residence and arrested him.
