Third man gets prison time for Salem jewelry theft

BRENTWOOD — A Woburn, Mass., man was sentenced to 2 ½ to 6 years in state prison for his part in stealing $80,000 worth of jewelry from a kiosk at a Salem mall.

Mark Pasquarello, 39, pleaded guilty to a felony theft charge Monday as part of a plea deal struck with county prosecutors.

He was the last of three men convicted for breaking into the Piercing Pagoda kiosk on the morning of Oct. 28, 2010, inside the Mall at Rockingham Park.

The three men wore suits to avoid suspicion and entered the mall before it opened around 8 a.m., according to police. Once inside, two men broke into cabinets using a crowbar, emptying thousands of dollars worth of jewelry into backpacks, while the third man served as a lookout, police said.

Pasquarello’s deal with allow him to serve his prison sentence in Massachusetts, where he is serving another prison term, according to court records.

A grand jury indicted him Oct. 4, 2011,weeks after his two partners, Michael Gouthro, 39, and Scott McCabe, 39, both of Somerville, Mass., were indicted in the case. McCabe and Gouthro are also serving 2 ½- to 6-year prison terms while concurrently serving sentences in Massachusetts. They also pleaded guilty to the Salem theft.

Police say the three men carried out similar thefts in Massachusetts using the same method of entering the mall dressed to appear as store managers.

During the Salem theft, the three men left minutes after the burglary through a service entrance.

Surveillance footage gave police their first clue into the identity of the men. Salem police were able to arrest them by working with police agencies in Massachusetts.

A Somerville housing police officer identified the men, leading to the arrest of McCabe on Dec. 19, 2010.

McCabe confessed after his arrest in Somerville and identified his co-defendants.
