Driver sought in Greenfield turkey massacre
GREENFIELD — A Francestown Road man said he is aghast after witnessing a motorist repeatedly drive back and forth through a flock of turkeys, killing at least four.
Petr Lord delights in seeing turkeys strut out of the woods and into his yard, but was appalled at seeing “a very loud, faded black Honda Prelude” deliberately drive into the turkeys” around 5:15 p.m. Sunday.
“I was standing in the kitchen of my Greenfield home, filming two flocks of bachelor turkeys approaching each other in my driveway, wondering if there would be any excitement,” Lord said in an e-mail.
Lord — who made four different videos of the incident — said he got a good view of a male driver he estimated to be around 30 who turned his car around to drive into the birds several times. Lord said the driver knows he was videotaped, as he made an obscene gesture to the camera.
Lt. Craig Morrocco said the incident remains under investigation by officers from New Hampshire Fish & Game who came to Lord's home Sunday to collect the dead turkeys. He said investigators hope to use the video to get a license plate number and a full description of the driver.
Morrocco said investigators could charge the driver with killing the turkeys in an illegal manner. The man's Honda was damaged; pieces of it were left in the roadway.
“A 20-plus pound turkey can cause damage,” Morrocco said.
“I'm happy to make him accountable,” Lord said Monday of the driver.
Lord, who moved to town about eight years ago, said he enjoys watching the turkeys feed on seed blocks he leaves out for them. On Monday morning, the flock of seven male turkeys he usually sees had been reduced to four.
“I'm sure there are more birds out there which are injured,” Lord said, adding “there were too many feathers to be just one bird.”
