PORTSMOUTH — Search crews battled gusty winds and turbulent waters as they looked for the body of a missing University of New Hampshire student around Peirce Island Tuesday.

Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott, 19, was last seen Oct. 9 leaving a class on campus, where she had started her first semester studying marine biology. She sent a text message around 9 p.m. that night to a friend saying she was on her way to visit another female friend on Mill Street in Dover. She was never heard from again.

Seth Mazzaglia, 29, of 1 Mill St. in Dover was arraigned on a charge of second-degree murder in Dover District Court Monday and is being held without bail at the Strafford County House of Correction. Police allege he strangled and/or suffocated Marriott in his apartment Oct. 9.

As the search for Marriott's body continues, a disturbing picture of her alleged killer is emerging. An aspiring local actor, karate instructor and gamer, Mazzaglia created his own website, which has since been taken down, detailing his career aspirations as an actor. He also had profiles on at least two online dating websites.

An okcupid.com profile under the name “DarkKaiser” features Mazzaglia's photograph, and provides details that match known facts about him. On the profile he says he is a 29-year-old Dover actor, writer and director who does not smoke, drink or use drugs.

In one word, he describes himself as “enigmatic” while also describing himself as “mercurial” and “paradoxical.”

According to the website's questionnaire derived personality traits, Mazzaglia was listed as being “more dominant,” “more sex-driven” and “more experienced in sex.” It also lists him as “less kind,” “less compassionate” and “less conventionally moral.”

He had not accessed the site since September 2009.

On the website www.bondage.com, a user identifying as “DarkKaiser” lists himself as a 29-year-old man “checking out the site.” The user last visited the site over a year ago and said he was a “master looking for a slave.”

More arrests?

The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office has declined to comment on how Mazzaglia and Marriott knew each other, who the female friend is she was going to visit and whether other arrests are expected.

The Portsmouth Herald cited a source that indicated police expect to make “multiple additional arrests in the case.”

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said authorities have not come to the point of considering how to proceed with prosecution if Marriott's body is not found.

“We certainly understand that would be a challenge, but we understood that when we brought the charge,” Young said. “It's an obstacle, but not a hurdle that can't be overcome.”

In regard to other possible arrests, Young said: “If evidence leads us to probable cause that other person or persons were involved in Miss Marriott's death, then appropriate charges will be brought at that time.”

Family and friends have said Mazzaglia was connected to the female friend Marriott was going to visit, a friend she had met through her job at the Target store in Greenland.

A family's pain

Around Peirce Island Tuesday, there were as many as four boats with New Hampshire Marine Patrol and the United States Coast Guard searching the waters. They employed the use of side scan sonar, an underwater camera and a cadaver dog in the day's search. The search began Friday night.

During a news conference Monday, Young said authorities had “credible information” that led them to search Peirce Island for Marriott's body. Young said a meeting will be held today to discuss the search effort and determine if more resources are needed.

She said the investigation continues to be a team effort led by Dover police with the assistance of the AG's office and state police.

“We're all committed to making sure that justice is served in this case,” Young said.

Young said victim-witness advocates are working with Marriott's family.

“The family has expressed to us at this time they would like privacy from the media, but I can't begin to express the pain and anguish a family must feel in circumstances like this,” Young said. “It is why we are so resolute to find Lizzi so they can bring her home and let her rest in peace.”
