Junior twins Colbi and Berklee Vaillancourt accounted for four of Derryfield’s five goals and the top-seeded Cougars defeated New Ipswich’s Mascenic, 5-0, as the Division III field hockey tournament opened in the Queen City Tuesday.

Colbi Vaillancourt figured in each of the five goals, scoring three and assisting on two. Berklee, meanwhile, scored once and assisted once. It was the third hat trick of the season for Colbi, who has 20 goals this year. Berklee’s first-half tally was her 16th of the campaign.

Derryfield goalie Lulu Carter, who did not make a save in the shutout victory, benefitted from the defensive play of Molly Provencher, who dealt capably with every Mascenic ball that rolled through toward the Derryfield goal.

Vikings goalie Brenna Pasieka was kept busy by the potent Derryfield offense and finished the game with 19 saves.

With the victory, Derryfield improved to 14-1. Mascenic ended its season at 4-10-1.

Boys’ soccer

Souhegan 2, Kennett 0: At Conway, Mike Hayden scored two goals and Matt Hopsenspirger assisted on both strikes as Souhegan improved to 7-5-3. Eagles keeper Ryan Zajentic turned in a remarkable performance, making a dozen saves while limiting the Sabers to just two goals. Kennett is 2-13.

Hopkinton 2, Hillsboro/Deering 0: At Hopkinton, Zach Rouleau scored off a corner from Doug Fleury and Riley McNicholas tallied on a breakaway as the Hawks moved to 14-1-0.

Liam McNicholas and Bennett Mosseau played strong defense, foiling a number of potential Hillsboro (7-8) counter-attacks. The match, scheduled for Hillsborough, was moved to Hopkinton because of unplayable field conditions.

Trinity 3, Merrimack Valley 0: At Manchester, Jacob Zimmerman, Zach Girad and Ozzie Kayha scored first half goals and Trinity rolled to 10-5 as the season winds down. Kahya added two assists to his totals.

Merrimack Valley keeper Trevan Miller turned aside 16 shots. MV is 2-12-1.

Girls’ soccer

Campbell 3, Pelham 0: At Litchfield, Casey Mellen scored three goals to power the Cougars who are 10-4.

Winning keeper Heather Baron made four saves in posting her fifth shutout of the season. Nikki Golden, Hannah Neild, Savannah Reinitzer, Stephaine LaBatt, Mandie Miller and Kylee Julia turned in strong defensive efforts. Gina Grimes stopped 21 shots in the Pythons goal.

Hollis/Brookline 3, Sanborn 0: At Hollis, Lindsey Vazquez, Erin Shields and Kashka Gammon provided the Cavaliers offense. Vazquez was also credited with an assist, as were Morgan Williamson and Hannah Modelski. The Cavs are 9-5-1, and Sanborn is 9-6.
