More than $75,000 raised in fight against breast cancer
NORTH CONWAY — Pink was the color in Mount Washington Valley on Oct. 14, as more than 400 walkers participating in the 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of North Conway took to the sidewalks and trails, raising more than $75,000 to fight the disease.
Breast cancer survivors were the honored participants on the route that began at the Whitaker Woods Homesite, the town-owned land at the northern end of North Conway Village. Determined walkers, all smiles, strode down through the village, then looped back up along the sidewalks along the North South Road to the John Fuller School on Pine Street. The school abuts Whitaker Woods, and those who did not want to go more than two miles could go back to the start.
Participants opting for the 3.5 mile walk entered the pine-timbered wide paths of Whitaker Woods, breathing in the healthy White Mountain air.
“Everyone is encouraged to wear pink, and participants who raise $75 or more get a pink T-shirt the day of the event that they can wear for the walk,” Katelyn Parker of the New England division of the American Cancer Society said. The donations go to the American Cancer Society for critical breast cancer research, early detection programs, and services.
Top participants were Lisa “BB” Brunelle, who raised — at last count — $4,800, and Lynn Ambler, with $1,690. Brunelle’s team, Bartenders for Boobs, raised $6,810. North Conway Sparks raised $4,811.
Tops in the businesses category was Walmart, raising $4,811 in donations.
Brunelle started Bartenders for Boobs after her sister, Loree, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her sister died in 2007.
“I learned that for every cancer victim we hear about, there are countless more; the families and friends who are left behind, wondering why. And wondering if there wasn’t something more they could have done. Bartenders for Boob is my something more,” Brunelle wrote in her appeal for donors.
Next year’s North Conway Making Strides event is on Oct. 20. Those wishing to make a donation can send a check to the American Cancer Society, Making Strides — North Conway NH, 2 Commerce Drive No. 110, Bedford, NH 03110.
